Help a dying computer

My build began acting up last weekend and all of the sudden has completely failed. Fortunately, I was able to get it to start up one last time in order to transfer some unbacked-up data, but now I am stuck and can't even reinstall windows.

I am no expert, but likely causes for the crash I though were either corrupt windows installation, failing HDD or failing memory.

My plan was to reinstall windows, run HDD diagnostic and memtest to see if either came back with poor results. BUT I can't seem to get my computer to load from CD. I've gone into the BIOS and changed settings to make CD the first, second and third bootable and removed HDD from the list entirely. I still can't get it to load from CD.

Several outcomes when I restart.

1. Boot from CD: blinks continuously with no action
2. Boot from CD: blinks, DVD spins
3. Boot from CD: blinks continuously, windows failed to start screen loads - 2 options: launch statup repair or start windows normally
3a. Startup repair - freezes OR runs startup repair (24 hours no action)
3b. Start windows normally - tries to launch windows (i don't know if this is from the CD or HDD) but it appears to be from the HDD even though it is not in the boot sequence

I don't know what to do...suggestions?

Well I pushed in all RAM and other connections and tried again...no go. Then I tried starting with memtest and it booted properly!

Then, I canceled memtest and put the win7 disc back in and it started! BUT it came to an error at the end saying windows did not start properly last time and there were two options - start windows and mem diagnostics. This failed

I HAVE XP and for some reason this install is now working?

Unplug the hard drives and try to boot from the CD. I just want to be sure your CD is not the problem (it seems it's not, but just to be sure).

It works fine with XP installled but not with 7?
How many times have you booted with XP? Once is not enough to say it's fine with XP.

It may be either driver issues or compatability with 7. What's your parts list?

OK, I fully installed XP with no problem so it's definitely not the DVD Drive. Then I shutdown and powered back on with the win 7 dvd in the drive.

It asks press any key to boot from CD. I press enter...changes to windows is loading files screen...goes through to status bars...starts to do the loading windows and then ...

Windows Boot Manager

Windows Failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:

1. Insert your windows installation disc and restart (neverending loop)
2. Choose language settings
3. Click repair your computer

If you do not have this disc......

Status: 0xc0000225
Info: An unexpected error has occured.

Enter to continue...I press enter...next screen
---------------------------------------------------------
Choose an operating system to start or press tab to select a tool...

Windows Setup [EMS Enabled] - if i select it goes back to the above

To specify and advanced option press F8 - heres the list...safe mode, safe mode with networking, safe mode with command prompt, enable boot logging, enable low res video, last know good configuration, directory services restore mode, debugging mode, disable automatic restart on system failure, disable driver signature enforcement, start windows normally

Tools: windows memory diagnostic

Actually that kinda makes some sense. Especically with these scenarios:

1. Boot from CD: blinks continuously with no action
2. Boot from CD: blinks, DVD spins
3. Boot from CD: blinks continuously, windows failed to start screen loads - 2 options: launch statup repair or start windows normally

Something else too, I googled the stop error code your getting and one of the issues that seem to pop up was how the sata mode was set. ide or acpi
thats one of the first drivers needed right? Setup loads to the ram drive and then it cant read the disk. You get a full status bar and then wham-nothin.

But that doesn't explain why your system crashed in the first place. Just why you couldn't load the OS.

here's a real nice tool jdeb posted for me:
http://neosmart.net/blog/2008/downlo...recovery-disc/
reccomend having it on hand for future use.

OK, after reading this Error 0xC0000225 - Vista Setup and Install I enabled APIC mode in BIOS and my original install disc loaded. YEHA!!

My plan is to install win 7, install updates to win, install updated drivers, install aVast and then troubleshoot the original problem...

1. checkdsk or seatools for the HDD
2. memtest for the RAM

If those go well, I will assume my windows install was corrupt...any other suggestions?

I successfully installed win7 64 bit, but my computer keeps freezing. No BSOD just freeze requiring hard restart.

Here are my specs:

MOBO - eVGA nForce 780i SLI FTW
CPU - Intel Core2 Quad Q9300
Power Supply - CoolerMaster Real Power Pro 650W (RS-650-ACAA-A1)
GPU - eVGA GeForce 9500GT
HDD - Seagate 500GB 16MB SATA HD (ST3500641AS-RK)
Optical Drive - LG GH223LS30 DVD

I ran memtest on both RAM sticks. No errors.
I ran chkdsk on HDD. No errors.
I ran Seatools. Short test pass. Long test 3 errors...passed with repair.

Is 3 errors passing with repair a means for me to buy a new HDD and see if that was the problem. I'm stumped

I need help!

I'll start with the specs...

MOBO - eVGA nForce 780i SLI FTW
CPU - Intel Core2 Quad Q9300
RAM - CORSAIR XMS2 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 (TWIN2X4096-6400C5C)
Power Supply - CoolerMaster Real Power Pro 650W (RS-650-ACAA-A1)
GPU - eVGA GeForce 9500GT
HDD - Seagate 500GB 16MB SATA HD (ST3500641AS-RK)
Optical Drive - LG GH223LS30 DVD

as of today...I swapped out the 500 GB for a 1TB suspecting HDD may be my problem. So now I have...

HDD - Seagate 1TB 32MB ST310005N1A1AS-RK

My computer was running smoothly ever since I replaced some bad RAM about 10 months ago. All of the sudden the computer began to freeze and require a hard restart.

Since then, I have backed-up, reinstalled windows 7 64bit, run memtest - pass on both sticks, run chkdsk on the 500GB - pass, run seatools on the 500 GB - short test = pass, long test = pass with repair (3 errors). I also replaced the HDD and reinstalled win 7.

The computer keeps freezing. It has frozen during win 7 install, during windows update, during program installations, basically no rhyme or reason.

PLEASE help! Does this sound like a hardware issue - MOBO, Power Supply, processor, graphics card? or could this be a BIOS or driver issue?

Send a message via Skype™ to Nikon
can you reproduce the problem, or is it random?

I've reinstalled windows about 5x today with different orders of driver installation, windows updates (the 48 I need due to my older copy of win 7), and program installation.

There is no BSOD just freeze.

Since it has happened during different types of operations, it's hard for me to tell what is the cause.

Am I missing any driver updates? Here's what I installed...

Graphics driver - from evga
Ethernet driver - from evga (this and storage were the packaged MOBO drivers download from the website)
Storage driver - from evga
Audio driver - from evga

Motherboards for Intel processors with Nvidia chipsets are notoriously unstable.

I'm not ready to blame the mobo as the sole cause of your issues, but my preference for recent socket 775 processors is one of the Asus P5Q series boards while they are still around.

Newegg.com - ASUS P5Q Pro Turbo LGA 775 Intel P45 ATX Intel Motherboard

Thanks for the recommendation glc. Do you have any other troubleshooting recommendations before I get a new MOBO?
