does this build make sense so far?
Hello everyone. I'm new here. Like a lot of others, I'm looking for advice as to whether my current component list makes sense to buy. I'm trying to build a gaming PC for about $2000. I've done a lot of research online, but I'm still confused about a few things.
CPU - Intel Core i7 950 I was going to get the 930, but this suddenly got cheaper. motherboard - Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R or ASUS P6X58D-E Can't tell which is better, any thoughts? I want to future-proof the mobo as much as possible, because it seems like the most painful thing to upgrade - have to make sure it's compatible with everything else. Is this true? GPU - nVidia GeForce GTX470 or ATI Radeon HD5850 Seems like 470 is a little more powerful, but also a little more expensive, and 5850 is quieter and runs cooler. Don't know if "quiet" and "cool" are realistic expectations for a gaming PC. Which would you buy? Also, what difference does it make which version of the card I buy (EVGA, ASUS, Gigabyte, etc)? RAM - Corsair TR3X6G1600C8D Dominator 6GB 1600MHz DDR3 Don't know how to judge RAM, it all seems the same. Does the MHz and timings make a lot of difference? SSD - Intel 160GB X25-M I was waiting for G3, but I heard it's been delayed until 2011, and maybe not "generally available" until 2012, whatever that means. Have you heard anything? case - Antec 300 or ? I don't want a fancy-looking, LED-adorned case, like most gaming cases seem to be. I picked the 300 because it's got lots of cooling and is simple and basic-looking, but I could do with a window in the side to see how much dust has accumulated. Is it reasonable to want a "quiet" gaming PC, in if so, can you recommend a quiet gaming case? PSU - Corsair AX850 or TX850 Is the "modular" AX850 worth an extra $60? OS - windows 7 pro Is there any reason to get ultimate? optical drive - ? (Don't know yet.) monitor/speakers - ? keyboard/mouse - ? Thanks a lot for any advice you can give me. |

Is this build strictly for gaming? if it is...u can drop the CPU from an I7 to an i5 760
spend more money on the video card.. a 5870 would be good

I would not go with a Gigabyte, I just ordered 14 of them for a build and they all were sent back because of Bios problems they could not resolve, the RMA process was tedious.
I recomend going with an Asus motherboard. The ATI 5850 is a great gaming card but Raiden is right the 5870 is a better choice.

Save some money - go socket 1156. More stable and easier to configure properly. Use one of the Asus P7P55D boards and the appropriate i5 or i7. 2x2 dual channel kits of DDR3-1333 or 1600, high performance high voltage tight timing ram not necessary. 850 watts is way more than you need for any single video card.
