First Time Builder. Help Appreciated!

Hey guys. I have decided that i want to build my own computer, so I have been researching here and there adn building a list of the parts i want. I am willing to spend between 600-800 bucks, my current build is at $825.

I basically want to use the PC for casual yet still high end gaming. I want it to be able to run Starcraft 2 () and maybe some other high end games if i decide to buy them. And, of course, all other standard functions as well, fast internet, etc.

I don't know that much about building my own PC, so I want to make sure that a) all of these components are good at performing and high quality before I buy them, and b) that these components will actually produce a working PC when I put them all together.

Here is my part list:

Antec Nine Hundred Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case: $99.99

Western Digital Caviar Black WD1001FALS 1TB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive: $79.99

Intel 533AN_MMWW2 Mini Card Ultimate-N WiFi Link 5300 Wireless Adapter: $35.25

SAPPHIRE Vapor-X 100283VX-2L Radeon HD 5770 (Juniper XT) 1GB 128-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card w/ Eyefinity: $154.99

OCZ Fatal1ty OCZ550FTY 550W ATX12V v2.2 / EPS12V SLI Ready 80 PLUS Certified Modular Active PFC Power Supply: $64.99

CORSAIR XMS3 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Triple Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model TR3X6G1600C9: $139.99: $79.99

Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 Wolfdale 3.0GHz LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Processor BX80570E8400: $169.50

I know i don't have a monitor yet, i'm still debating whether i should buy one or use my 32" samsung tv. please take a look and let me know if this is a solid build!!! If i can knock 100-200 bucks off the price then let me know, otherwise any help would be appreciated!

You don't have a motherboard listed.. Did you forget or are you looking for a recommendation?

also 550W may not be enough to power the computer..600W or 650W may be better.. look for Corsair

I'm not sure if this Build will get High End Gaming...it'll run newer games at mid settings

You also don't have an OS listed. You can get an OEM Win7 disc for around $100 from Newegg.

EDIT: you've selected triple channel RAM but that board only supports dual channel.

Raiden, I don't know about the video card (I am not knowledgeable about them), but that looks pretty sweet. I would really up the processor and maybe memory, if it is going to be used for much serious stuff other than gaming and I would prefer a modular Power supply, but that looks like it has some good parts.

Am I missing something, or did you miss a hard drive? I would get one or more Western Digital Black 1 TB. If a monitor is needed, I would get an Asus.

the video card manufacture or just the video card itself?

I had this in mind when choosing the parts for the build... i do agree with the processor but i tried keeping this on his budget...for $25 more he can replace the i3-540 to 560

Aren't modulars on the expensive side?

Either. I just don't know much about gaming cards in particular meaning I can't offer an opinion.

Yeah, I am aware of the price budget, so of course you had to knock down the processor to stay there. I was referring more for me personally. Same thing with the modular. There may be one that has a similar price normally with a good brand, but with that being on sale, it would be almost impossible to beat I imagine.

Did you see my edit about missing a hard drive?

This thread may shed some light for you on gaming cards/

RAM, Memory brand rating

I agree with you and yes pretty impossible but if you find one even better.

Ha yes..added (can't believe i forgot) which now the total goes over $800 budget. But counting what he listed he went over his budget as well which amounts to a $23 difference

$800. for a decent gaming machine might be a smidge too little, but I think the list you came up with is good and close in price, $1000, is probably more reasonable for a strong gamer which might be more than the op needs.

wow, thanks for all the feedback!

"You also don't have an OS listed. You can get an OEM Win7 disc for around $100 from Newegg."

what is OEM? do i need that if im building my own PC? sorry im very new to this.

in general, its okay if i exceed the $800, i just dont want to jump up hundreds of dollars or anything like that. 900-1000 i would consider, but prob more around 900.

and is that recoomended build that Raiden posted fully functional? meaning the RAM would fit with the motherboard, CPU, etc?

Thanks for all the help!

Understood.

yes correct as both the mobo and ram are ddr3.

i would wait though for someone else to give some input as they could put there 2 cents in.

Yes, I'm not planning on purchasing anything right now, I want to make sure that I will have a great machine planned out before I do that.

OEM operating systems are for system builders / new machines etc. They are cheaper, but you get no support from Microsoft (technical that is, you still get the warranty and free updates etc.) You pay a good deal more for the retail version to get the packaging and this limited, free support.

I missed the optical (CD / DVD etc.) too. It depends on what you want to do, but the one listed in my signature I think does most everything. It has Lightscribe support if you ever want to burn labels on the specialized (and more expensive) media needed to do so (but will still burn normal ones), it burns dual layer I believe (I have not done it yet) on the right media. The only thing I can think of it might not do is Blueray. You can get ones cheaper if you don't want some of these things or more (perhaps) if you need Blueray.

Alright. So if i already have windows 7 professional 64bit on disk should i skip the OEM? or is it absolutely required?

Do they make that drive without lightscribe? i have never and never see myself using lightscribe, i use sharpies lol.

Also, is there enough space in my computer case for the drive? What about the hard drive/everything else? Would there be space for 2 hard drives?

What exactly is the process of building and mounting everything in the PC case itself? do i need to buy wires or do they come with the components? am i going to need to solder things?

Sorry to pose all these questions at once.
I'm just very curious and excited to get this ball rolling.

Depends if the disc was used to install on another computer? (Serial key)

Just Match up the parts to the slots...
No wires as the motherboard comes with them...
No soldering required..

The case you listed has enough to fit 6 Drives

What is the reason behid a wireless card? Can you not run a wired connection? Especially for gaming because a wireless card just adds latency to the game when playing online

well i could run wired while im at school, which is most of the time, but when im at home there is no wired port close to where my pc would be so i would want a wireless card for that. is there a wired port built in to the case?

All motherboards today have onboard ethernet. As for wireles cards, the general thought is to get the same brand as the wireless router you are using.

Okay so here is another build that i have modified from my very first one, using Raidens recommended and changing a few other components from some other recommendations on another forum. Here, from Raiden's build i changed the graphics card, power supply, and hard drive. Let me know what you think, the power supply is weaker and the hard drive is cheaper as well, but the graphics card was more expensive and better (so i was told).

LITE-ON 24X DVD Writer Black SATA Model iHAS424-98 LightScribe Support: $23.99

Antec Nine Hundred Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case: $99.99

SAMSUNG Spinpoint F3 HD103SJ 1TB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive: $74.99

GIGABYTE GV-N460OC-1GI GeForce GTX 460 (Fermi) 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card: $219.99

OCZ ModXStream Pro OCZ500MXSP 500W ATX12V V2.2 / EPS12V SLI Certified CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS Certified Modular Active PFC Power Supply compatible with core i7: $59.99

CORSAIR XMS3 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) Desktop Memory Model TW3X4G1333C9A G: $82.99

ASUS P7P55 LX LGA 1156 Intel P55 ATX Intel Motherboard: $109.99

Intel Core i3-540 Clarkdale 3.06GHz LGA 1156 73W Dual-Core Desktop Processor BX80616I3540: $124.99

Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit 1-Pack for System Builders: $99.99

Total............around $896.00

give or take the OEM, that is the latest build i have. comments please!

I wouldn't do the Samsung hard drive. The Western Digital black is MUCH better. Okay, the OEM is just a way of getting an operating system cheaper. I wouldn't skimp on the power supply either. It is a bad move. I don't know if that will power your computer with a gaming card, but someone else might. Since you don't want Lightscribe we could save you a few bucks there.

Alright, cool. Thanks for the feedback! I didnt really like those parts either, I am just asking around to make sure I get the best stuff. Should I substitute these components?

Motherboard: Newegg.com - MSI 880GM-E41 AM3 AMD 880G HDMI Micro ATX AMD Motherboard

CPU: Newegg.com - AMD Athlon II X3 445 Rana 3.1GHz 3 x 512KB L2 Cache Socket AM3 95W Triple-Core Desktop Processor ADX445WFGMBOX

I will get rid of that power supply and hard drive. is that GIGABYTE video card any good? or should i buy an intel/AMD branded one?
