The radeon 6800 series video cards are due out in a few days.
Wait and decide after the reviews shows up.

The i7-870 is only another $10. What is your budget for a video card?

decent grahpics, on the cheap, hmm perhaps a 5770 or a bit higher up 5830 or gtx460 768 model. not too sure how much of a gpu load photoshop is.

As a moderate gamer, with a primary interest in photoshop, and a $150.00 budget a Radeon 5770 would be a good choice.

Unless you are going to overclock, 1333 should be fine.

The P55-based boards prefer standard 1.5 volt ram, and 1333 is sufficient.

i notice in the newegg reviews for the CPU they talk a lot about the stock heatsink being crap, is it really necessary to buy a separate one, or do you think the one that comes with it should be fine? i've never messed with those before.

The stock heatsink is fine unless you will be heavily overclocking the CPU.

there really is no point to getting 1600 ram, as it wont run at those speeds unless you overclock (as far as i know). you may have to manually edit the memory settings to get that ram to run stable.

Stick with glc's suggestion 1.5v 1333 ram. Just look at the QVL and get one of them. Don't make this important selection the weak link in your build, you are asking for aggravation. If you want to overclock the ram, then get the matching ram in the QVL.

P55 chipsets are fickle in regards to memory. your choice may work but it also may cause weird little problems that will have you scratching your head.

I also question the choice of an XFX video card from a quality and support standpoint. The HIS I recommended is actually a few bucks cheaper.

I agree, I am not a huge fan of XFX or the Juniper XT chip because you can buy an OC'd version of the 5770 around the same price and have better performance and quieter fan and runs cooler.HIS is the better way to go or better yet a Diamond but they are a little more money and currently out of stock at NewEgg.

Any 5770 will "handle graphics decently" regardless of its clock speeds.

ok, should i go back to this for the RAM?
Newegg.com - Kingston ValueRAM 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10600) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model KVR1333D3K2/4GR

i guess i got a little confused after looking around because 1600 seems to be the "standard" RAM now, so i tried to work it in. but i have no problem sticking with the 1333. i can't find any QVC for the mb online, hopefully this memory will be ok.

as far as the video card, i was looking at a different HIS card somewhere and saw a ton of negative reviews that scared me off from that brand. not questioning glc's expertise though i do trust what he says. i'll switch back to HIS.

thanks guys!!!

Go to the Asus website, then the product page for the motherboard. Look in the Memory/Device Support tab for the QVL.

well... tried putting it together today. failed. so disappointing.

been messing with it for quite awhile with no luck.

the board lights up, fans spin, dvdrom will open/close. but i get no display and the power light blinks on and off on the monitor. no beeps. no bios.

i tried rechecking everything, reseated the RAM, tried with just 1 stick, unplugged the HDD and DVD just in case. reseated the video card. no luck...

oh also there is no light on the keyboard. does that mean the motherboard is bad?

any ideas?? i read thru some posts on here about problems with new builds, but still stuck. i'm not able to swap out parts to check stuff either really.

SOME clicking is normal. Before returning it, run manufacturer's diagnostics on it.

having another problem...
in windows7 (64bit) it is showing only 2 GB (of 4gb) useable RAM.
i tried msconfig to see if the option for max memory settings was checked, it is not.

i went into BIOS and see that 2048 useable RAM is listed there.
i am running memtest now, it lists
slot 0: 2048 mb pc3-10600
slot 1: 2048 mb pc3-10600

it recognizes that both sticks are there.

this is the RAM i ended up getting:
Newegg.com - G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model F3-10666CL8D-4GBHK

it is listed on the mtherboard specs as compatible.

i see in the memtest that it's saying settings: ddr3-13337 / cas 9-9-9-24 / single channel
(the newegg specs for theram say 8-8-8-21 timing..)

i didn't change any settings in BIOS when i set things up. i figured it'd auto detect that stuff? the ram is in A1 B1 for dual channel as the manual describes. what do i do to fix this?

nevermind about the RAM, that's working now. must not have had it seated properly? i ended up taking each out and trying with just 1 at a time to make sure each worked, then when i did both again it saw 4gb. whew.

also, about the hard drive. i ran the diagnostics, and it PASSED. but the ticking still makes me nervous, i never had a drive tick like this before, and it's pretty frequent and annoying. i think i'll RMA it just to be on the safe side.

Some clicking is indeed normal. I was also fretting about one of my drives. I decided to leave it as it is with its clicking and it's still running strong. Of course I backed up, just in case. But backups have to be done whether the drive clicks or not, so there.

Just back up any data you have on it that you can't live without and let it be. If it goes, then RMA it. What if they send you a replacement that also clicks? (Or what if they test it and then return the same unit to you because it's not defective?)

The kind of clicking you should fear is the one that sounds like a marble inside a tin can that is being shaken; and this clicking can be identified right away.
