Part purchasing questions
Ok I am new here, and I am looking at building myself a new computer. I'm not a huge gamer but I definitely do occasionally play some pc games so a computer which can support the latest games at high settings would be preferred. I am also trying to avoid passing the $1k mark, which I know puts a lot of restrictions on my buying but its a goal.
I am fairly competent on the inner works of a computer and for the most part I know what parts I need to buy. However what confuses me is compatibility issues and what exactly comes with the things I buy. For instance some of the cases I was looking at seem to come with cooling systems, so I'm not sure if I need to get one separately, etc. From what I was reading, it seems like I need to pick a CPU and motherboard first and then work from there. I was looking at: Processor: Intel Core i7-860 Lynnfield 2.8GHz 8MB L3 Cache LGA 1156 95W Quad-Core Newegg.com - Intel Core i7-860 Lynnfield 2.8GHz 8MB L3 Cache LGA 1156 95W Quad-Core Processor BX80605I7860 MotherBoard ASUS P7P55 WS SuperComputer with NF200 LGA 1156 Intel P55 ATX Intel Newegg.com - ASUS P7P55 WS SuperComputer with NF200 LGA 1156 Intel P55 ATX Intel Motherboard Which are sold on the site together for $444 I assume the two are compatible since they are sold together but reinsurance would be nice. Also I see the processor comes with a cooling unit but is that enough? From there I'm not entirely sure which direction to go. Graphics I know I need a graphics card since the motherboard does not have integrated graphics. I could really use some pointers here. I want something capable of running recent games decently, but hardcore settings are not a must. I play WoW now and then which is a really old game but I'd like to run it on max settings. I'd like to be able to run newer games at decent settings like the new Fallout game, etc. Memory I know I need DDR3 memory but I'm not sure exactly which type. I've bought memory in the past to upgrade an old computer, and it didn't work, so I don't want to run into that case again. I don't really think i need more than 4gb although 6gb wouldn't hurt I guess if the price was right. Kingston HyperX 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820104166 Case, Power Supply, Cooling I know I need a case, power supply, and cooling units, but I can't tell if these things come all in one or what. Plus there is space issues and what not for the motherboard. I'm not overly concerned with how the case looks. Something cheap that still provides a cool environment is ideal. I could really use some pointers here. Hard Drive I know I need a hard drive. 750gb+ would be ideal Western Digital Caviar Black WD1001FALS 1TB 7200 RPM http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136284 but there were a few negative reviews saying the HD died in a month or so. In all of the premade computers i've bought I've never had a HD die on me... is this something I should really be worried about? DVD I need a dvd drive. I don't really need anything other than a basic dvd rw drive. I don't really see needing blueray. SAMSUNG Black 22X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827151188 Internet/Wireless What do I need to do if I wanted to implement a Wireless Connection into it that worked on a G network? OS I already have the means to install Windows 7 on it, but do I need something special to make sure that the cd/dvd works on a new cd/dvd player during the install process? Keyboard Mouse and Monitor I don't really need a keyboard or mouse, i have plenty of those. I'm pretty sure I can handle choosing out speakers and a monitor. The monitor doesn't need to be factored into the cost because I have one already but I'll want to eventually buy a smaller one later for school. Anything you guys can give me would be great. Its no rush as this is a work in process. If you can only answer sections of it thats fine too. Ideally I'd like to buy all the parts from the same site to avoid 10 different shipping fees so if you recommend parts could you do so on newegg or help me find a new processor/motherboard on a different site you prefer first? Thanks again Last edited by barnesm999; 10-20-2010 at 08:02 PM. |

I'd recommend you stay away from that supercomputer motherboard and the Samsung DVD drive. That's why I made specific recommendations.
Everything you need is included, it will all work together, power and cooling are sufficient. If you really want a Nvidia card, get a GTX460 1GB. Newegg.com - ASUS ENGTX465/2DI/1GD5 GeForce GTX 465 (Fermi) 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card If you want a higher end motherboard, get this one: Newegg.com - ASUS P7P55D-E Pro LGA 1156 Intel P55 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard Newegg reviews need to be taken with a grain of salt. |

oh I did a quick glance at your motherboard and thought it was the same one.
I went with the samsung player because I've had good experience with their drives, but the other ones cheaper and I trust your opinion of it. I swapped out the components you suggested. Thank you! |

Also..dont rely just on reviews especially from newegg.
What GLC recommends is what you normally should get.
