Welcome to PCMech!

What is the purpose of your computer?

Which applications will you be running?

You will need to pick an operating system.
Suggested: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-754-_-Product

Choose the 870 over the 860. There is only a $10 price difference.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-213-_-Product

You may not need the SSD unless you need screaming fast boot times and read/write times. If it is going to be a gaming computer then for the same money you may want to choose a faster graphics card, perhaps the 480 or 5870.

Thanks for responding David. I'll be doing fairly heavy application development, running VS2010, SQL Server 2008, and IIS 7. I usually have several IDE's open at same time (with resharper), running in debugger, and driving twin 24" 1920x1200 monitors (adding the 2nd monitor shortly). As a hobby, I also do a good bit of video editing, usually at 720p or 1080p, and for this alone I'm very much looking forward to the i7 and ssd (the read/write times alone are killing me when re-encoding a 10-15 GB file). I sure wish I had more time for games, and I want my video card to be able to give me and the kids an outstanding experience when we ask for it, but I'll not be a hard-core gamer with this machine.

I've already secured a Windows 7 Ultimate for this build (which I need for the foreign language support), which is why I didn't write it down in my post.

Thanks for the tip for the 870! You are right, just $10 more, may as well.

I'd recommend a P55 board instead of H57. Look at the Asus P7P55D-E. I also think you are overspending for ram - you are better off with cheaper 1.5 volt ram. If you are going to get a SSD, you may as well get a SATA 6.0 model - look at Crucial.

Thanks.

Is there any point to getting 1600 memory? The 1.5v seems to drop me back to 1333.

The crucial ssd's seem to have slower write speeds (140MB/s), as listed on newegg. Will SATA 6.0 actually improve the ssd's performance?

1333 is plenty fast. You won't notice a difference without benchmarking your computer. Someone else can answer the second question.

I've made a few changes. I left the ssd alone until I get a definitive answer on SATA 6. How does it look now?

The LX board is not true SATA 6.0/USB 3.0 - get the P7P55D-E board.

I would change the Western Digital from a blue to a black. The blacks are faster and have a better warranty.

Overall it looks like a really good build. If you want more speed, then for another 20 bucks get this 1TB WD Black with 64 megs of cache.

Thanks for all the really great help! I think I'm nearly there.

I had consciously chosen the blue to save money, since the 1TB drive was to be more long-term storage of multimedia files (I have two other 1TB drives). However, after reading the stats on the black, the speed sounds so impressive I'm gonna go for it! No sense to be frugal at this point. My read/write speeds are really gonna kick-a** on this box!

Thanks also for pointing out that the "P7P55D-E LX" is not the same as the "P7P55D-E". I've corrected that (I think).

Read rate: yes. Write rate: no.
Also note that due to parallelism the write rate doubles with the capacity. So the write speed of the 128GB model is approx twice that of the 64GB, while write rate of the 256GB is approximately twice that of the 128GB. The (claimed)write rate of the 256GB model is 215MB/s. The price also doubles with every step up.
