extremely tight-budgeted gaming build ($300-$500)

i'm a broke student running on a prehistoric(not an overstatement) computer that just doesn't cater to my needs anymore. i'm on very tight budget and as the thread title says, i'm not looking to spend more than $500. however, i do have an existing 9500gt and a 400gb seagate barracuda that i could recycle to save some money. i'd like to be able to play SC2, WoW and other various MMO's at decent settings with acceptable frame rates. i'm not sure what parts would be the best bang for my buck, seeing as there are so many options (i3, 555 C3, 955). i know i'll be able to count on you guys to put together a kick-ass rig for me though. thanks in advance

edit: forgot to note that i also have the OS and peripherals ready. i also want to be able to upgrade this computer in the future, so future-proof parts are preferred, if possible..

Is your video card AGP or PCI-E? Is the hard drive IDE or SATA? What do you have for a case and power supply (brand and exact model of power supply, please).

Don't get your hopes up. There's no "kick-ass" rig possible for $500.

the video card is pci-e and hdd is sata

my current pc is a pre-assembled hp pavilion a747c. the video card was bought a long time ago and the reason for having a different hdd is because the old one died

unfortunately, with prebuilt pc's, the only things you are going to be able to reuse are the HDD and gpu. case and cpu are out due to propriotory reasons (different form factors so you cant put a retail mobo inside that case.) the PSU will prolly not be strong enough to power a new machine, and is also most likely designed to only fit in that particular case.

yeah i did initially understand that i was only going to be able to reuse the hdd and gpu

thanks for the suggestions glc! the motherboard looks perfect. i do have a question though. i noticed that the cas latency on the ram was 9. is that going to create any noticable difference from ram with 6 or 7 las catency?

those cases are sweet, david. i did a little searching though and decided on this case:
Newegg.com - Antec VSK-2000 Black ATX Mid Tower Computer Case
i appreciate your suggestions though

you wont notice any difference in real world useage. in benchmarks it may show up a little, but essentially there is no great difference.

The P55 chipset gets along best with 1.5 volt ram.

You are pinching pennies - it makes no sense to spend more for so-called high performance ram. CAS 9 is DDR3 standard.
