Rebuilding my Build ( with a question at the end)

On Monday I turned on the ole computer and walked away. About 10 minutes later I hear a faint pop, then the sweet sweet smell of a ruined capacitor filled the room.

Come to find out, the power supply was dead.

So off to the store I go. After returning home with the new power supply I proceeded to replace the damaged one. Success.....or so I thought. The pc would not fire up. What could be the issue now I wondered? Hmmm - lets start removing items to see if we can solve this mystery. I pulled out the Video card and proceeded to power up the pc. Success it came alive, but only for a short time. It then began to cycle on then off automatically. Ok, next out came the Ram….same issue. Crap, what is wrong with this thing?

Back to the store I go. This time I thought instead of making multiple trips to replace items that may have gone bad I decided to just buy everything new again. Purchased a new Video Card, Motherboard, Ram, Hardrives, Processor. Everything you would need except for the case. There is no way the failed power supply could take that when it died.

So I proceeded to remove the old motherboard, processor, and ram and started replacing with the new items from the store.

Motherboard and Processor successfully pieced together. Next came the video card, Success it fit perfectly in its little slot. I thought to myself I wonder if my old hard drive and ram would still be ok or did they succumb to the attack of the power supply.

Placed the old hard drive into its slot and attached all the cables. Next came the Ram. Placed them into their respective homes and hoped for the best.

Made sure all cables were securely attached and in the proper place, then proceeded to power up the machine.

Crap nothing happened. What the heck could it be now. Ahh found the issue, forgot to flip the switch to the ole power strip that the machine was plugged into. Success it is coming alive. Hopefully it will stay on this time. Seems to be running smoothly now.

It seems that the ole hard drive was sparred. It booted it windows and proceeded to update the required drives and other items.

So far so good. Everything on this hard drive is there and there do not seem to be any problems.

Oops spoke to soon.

There only seems to be one problem that I can find. The system does not seem to recognize my other hard drive that was installed. It found the one with the OS on it but could not find the other. It does not seem to be identified while looking in the BIOS as well.
So now the only issue that I need help in solving is how to get the other hard drive installed? I figured that all I would need to do is plug it in & turn on the ole pc and it would be recognized automatically. At least that is how it was in the past ( I Think).

Here is a list of the items that I purchased and used in the rebuild

Motherboard – Gigabyte EA-EP45-UD3L
Processor – Intel C2D E7500
Video Card - GeForce 210
OS – Vista
Hard Drive not being identified – Seagate 500gb ( Sata )

Do you have another computer that you can use to plug the hard drive that is not being recognized into?

Obviously, the PSU when it died may have taken out your hard drive.

Send a message via Skype™ to Nikon
forgive me i seem confused.
exactly which HDD does it detect? the new one or the old one?

from what i gather, the old HDD works, but the new one does not. if that is the case, then take it back for an exchange. also, try using a different sata port, and a different cable.

Sounds like he had two drives to start.

But I have a silly question. Since you found the power switch on the surge protector had flipped and got your build to come alive, Did you try to rebuild with just the new PSU?

Anyway, what was on the hdd that's not being recognized? If the system was accessing the drive when the PSU went, the hdd's most likely a gonner. I think if the drive is not seen in bios, all you can do is double check your connections if you don't have another pc to check it with. But i wouldn't toss it untill I could verify it as non-functioning with a known good MB channel.

Yes I tried to power up the ole PC with the new power supply plugged directly into the wall outlet (no Surge protector)

And Yes I had two hard drives to start. I didnt want to open up the new one and plug it in if the old ones still worked. Now I trying to decide if I want to install the new one or not.

Im pretty sure the HDD is a gonner. I think Im going to take it into Micorcenter this weekend to see if they can access the drive since I dont have the means to try it myself.

If you have a laptop or access to *ANY* other computer, you can use a USB adapter.

IDE/SATA to USB 2.0 Cable Adapter - Turn Your 2.5", 3.5" or 5.25" IDE or SATA Drive Into A USB Drive! 2020

This is something that's nice to have anyway.

Nah, I'm retired. I only work on computers for family and a few very select customers now.

Joplin is pretty much the same as it's been in the past 3 years that I've been here. However, they have been revitalizing the old downtown.
