Upgrade Assistance please
Hi
I currently have the following system: Gigabyte 965P-DS3P MOBO Intel E6600 CPU Palit 9800GT GPU 3.5gb ram Win XP Pro SP3 I am looking to upgrade but not looking for a full rebuild i guess. Most use is for photography / photoshop and general net surfing. Am I able to upgrade CPU keeping the MOBO and if so what would be the best i could get ? Cheers for the help. |

GIGABYTE TECHNOLOGY Socket 775 - Intel P965
You will need to know whether your motherboard is hardware revision 2.0 or 3.3. That's what "PCB" stands for - "printed circuit board". "Non-official support" means that you will be overclocking the chipset to get it to 1333 FSB speed, and I wouldn't try it unless you have DDR2-800 or faster ram. "N/A" means no support at all. Also note that you may have to update the bios. Upgrading the CPU may not be particularly cost-effective. You may want to look at a motherboard/CPU/ram upgrade. |

Hi
Yes i did. Just tryign to get my head around things i guess. So the best processor i could install would be the Core™ 2 Extreme QX9650 would this be correct. I did a check and it appears that this might be discontinued now. I will keep looking though. CHeers |

Most of those processors ARE discontinued. You can still find them in the secondary market, and they tend to be a bit expensive depending on supply and demand. Any of the Extremes are going to be ridiculous.

Online Vendors - OCAU Wiki
Start checking vendors. A Q9550 or Q9650 is probably going to be as strong as you can get without spending more than a whole new motherboard/CPU/ram combo with current technology would cost. I checked a couple of vendors and only found incompatible or weaker quads. |
