First Build (Gaming/General)
Hello, first let me start by saying that these forums have been invaluable as I research products to use on my first attempted computer build.
I decided to build my own computer the other day when I realized that I knew basically nothing about the "guts" of a computer, and thought that this will be an important skill as I get older. I would really appreciate it if one of the more knowledgeable members of this board will look through my build and answer the question of "will it work?" (Just to help me make sure that I don't order all of this stuff and I forgot something or one thing doesn't work with the other. Also, if you see somewhere I could spend my money better (1000$ cap) that would be great. So here is what is sitting in my shopping cart: MoBo --> ASUS M4A78T-E Motherboard (99$) ASUS M4A78T-E Motherboard - AMD 790GX, AM3 128MB DDR2 Side-Port, ATI Hybrid, CrossFire, PCIe 2.0, DDR3 Memory USB2.0, RAID, HDMI/DVI at TigerDirect.com Video Card --> XFX HD685XZNFC Radeon HD 6850 Video Card (190$) XFX HD685XZNFC Radeon HD 6850 Video Card - 1024MB, GDDR5, PCIe, mini-Display Port, HDMI, Dual DVI at TigerDirect.com Hard Drive --> Western Digital Caviar Black WD1002FAEX 1TB 7200 RPM 64MB (90$) Western Digital WD1002FAEX Caviar Black Hard Drive - 1TB, 7200RPM, 64MB, SATA 6Gbs at TigerDirect.com Case --> COOLER MASTER HAF 922 RC-922M-KKN1-GP Mid Tower 90$ Newegg.com - COOLER MASTER HAF 922 RC-922M-KKN1-GP Black Steel + Plastic and Mesh Bezel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case Processor --> AMD HDZ970FBGMBOX Phenom II X4 970 Black Edition Processor - 3.50GHz, Socket AM3 180$ Newegg.com - AMD Phenom II X4 970 Black Edition Deneb 3.5GHz 4 x 512KB L2 Cache 6MB L3 Cache Socket AM3 125W Quad-Core Desktop Processor HDZ970FBGMBOX Power Supply--> Corsair CMPSU-600CX Builder Series CX600 Power Suppy 75$ Corsair CMPSU-600CX Builder Series CX600 Power Suppy - ATX, 600 Watt, 120mm Ultra-Quiet Fan, Single +12V Rail at TigerDirect.com Memory--> Corsair XMS2 4GB PC6400 DDR2 800MHz Memory Upgrade - 2x2048MB 83$ Newegg.com - CORSAIR XMS3 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model CMX4GX3M2A1600C9 OS --> Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit 1-Pack for System Builders - OEM100$ Newegg.com - Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit 1-Pack for System Builders - Operating Systems Blu-Ray/DVD --> Lite-On iHES108-29 Blu-Ray Combo Drive - BD-ROM 8X, DVD-ROM 16X, CD-ROM 48X (OEM) 60$ Lite-On iHES108-29 Blu-Ray Combo Drive - BD-ROM 8X, DVD-ROM 16X, CD-ROM 48X (OEM) at TigerDirect.com Floppy/Card Reader --> Sabrent CRW-FLP2 Floppy Drive w/USB 2.0 Internal Card Reader & Writer 20$ Sabrent CRW-FLP2 Floppy Drive w/USB 2.0 Internal Card Reader & Writer (SDHC & Vista ready) at TigerDirect.com -------- Again, I know it's a long read but this is my first build (hopefully of many) and I just want to make sure it's not a colossal failure. Thanks! |

The CX Builder series Corsair can't be trusted, get a VX or TX. Neither can XFX video cards, get an Asus, Diamond, or HIS. There is no point in buying a SATA 6.0 hard drive because the motherboard is only SATA 3.0. That motherboard does not have a floppy controller, if you need a floppy drive it will have to be USB external.

Cool. I switched my video card to Sapphire 100315L Radeon HD 6850 Video Card - 1024MB, GDDR5, PCIe, mini-Display Port, HDMI, Dual DVI at TigerDirect.com
and my power supply to Newegg.com - CORSAIR CMPSU-650TX 650W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Compatible with Core i7 Power Supply |

Sapphire is a good card, but they have no end user support. Didn't you read my brand recommendation?
While you are at it, compare all your components on Newegg. They are a much more reputable vendor. If you need a card reader, get a card reader. That combo won't work, like I said. Also, like I said, you should change the hard drive to a SATA 3gb/s Black. |

I did, just wasn't thinking. Found this Video Card, seems like a good fit:
Newegg.com - ASUS EAH6850 DirectCU/2DIS/1GD5 Radeon HD 6850 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card with Eyefinity And this is the Hard Drive type you were talking about, correct? Newegg.com - Western Digital Caviar Green WD10EARS 1TB 5400 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive Thanks! |

That hard drive is too slow for gaming. Get a Western Digital Caviar black.

Ok, I switched to the Black.
You guys think I will be able to get max fps on ultra settings on games like MW2, Black Ops, WoW, and SC2? Thanks again for all the help, it is much appreciated! (and any other bang for buck tips are very welcome!) |

Cool.
Also, are there any cables that I must get? Or does that all generally come with? |

The mobo comes with all the cables you'd need for up to two hard drives.
Additionally, quality cases also come with cables. |

What is your monitor resolution? Black op's just came out today. I plan on buying it. I could get back to you on that.

This is my guess being an avid gamer myself.
For max game settings except for perhaps anti-aliasing 8x or MSAA 8x.... MW2...probably Black Op's...don't know for sure. It's a brand new game. I would not worry about it with the card you chose. WOW...Yes. SC2...Yes. Last edited by David M; 11-09-2010 at 02:42 PM. |

One more question --
What warranties do you recommend I get on which parts? The 1 year replacement extended warranty on the video card is 26$, 2 year is 43$ Basically, what parts are worth getting warranties on? Also, 650W should be enough for my system, right? |

If you want to save a few bucks (since I know you're on a $1,000 cap) the HIS 6870 is as good as the Diamond 6870 (and $10 cheaper).
HIS H687F1G2M Radeon HD 6870 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card with Eyefinity The 650W PSU is more than adequate for your system unless you plan on overclocking or using two cards in Crossfire. |

Awesome, I will replace it for sure.
Also, any suggestions on the warranties? Last thing I need to figure out before I buy!!! |

I don't believe in extended warranties. None of your components are that expensive to replace later. The CPU has a 3 year warranty and the HIS card has a 2 year warranty.

Thanks for all the help!!!! Just submitted my order to Newegg and it came out at 1260$ for everything - not too bad!
Now, comes the fun part -- putting this beast together! I'm sure I will be snooping around these forums looking for tips on how to best assemble my PC! |
