First time building gaming & modeling rig

Heyy everyone. Never built a computer before. Going to use it for gaming & 3d modeling. Figured I should now since dell wants ~$1000 more than the newegg parts. My price range was up to $2000.

Already put together what I (think) I need.

Would like to know if all the parts together would work, or if I'm missing anything obvious, or if I can save alot somewhere.

I would change the hard drive to a Western Digital Black, more reliable, supports sata 6GB/s and better warranty.
Newegg.com - Western Digital Caviar Black WD1002FAEX 1TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive

This is the recommended wireless card here, little less money, windows 7 certified. Rosewill
Newegg.com - Rosewill RNX-G300EX IEEE 802.11b/g PCI Wireless Card Up to 54Mbps Data Rates 64/128-Bit WEP, 802.1x, WPA, WPA2, AES, TKIP with 100cm cable external 2 dBi Antenna

I would save some aggravation and go with the more stable P55 chipset, ASUS P7P55D-E LX. Do you really need more than one PCIe slots? I do not see a need for one based on your initial build, unless you plan on going SLI in the future.
Newegg.com - ASUS P7P55D-E LX LGA 1156 Intel P55 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

Here is a nice CPU that comes with a Heatsink/fan
Newegg.com - Intel Core i7-860 Lynnfield 2.8GHz 8MB L3 Cache LGA 1156 95W Quad-Core Processor BX80605I7860

Change the power supply, go with a known high quality and reliable unit.CORSAIR CMPSU-650TX
Newegg.com - CORSAIR CMPSU-650TX 650W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Compatible with Core i7 Power Supply

Try the on-board sound, you can always add the card you chose later if you are not satisfied.

get 2 kits of A-DATA memory
Newegg.com - A-DATA 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model AD3U1333B2G9-DRH

I am not a big fan of gaming cards for use with 3D modeling but it will work, depending on your software some of the features may be limited. As far as a gaming card that is right at the top though.

My thoughts in bold.

Good choice.

HDD
Newegg.com - SAMSUNG Spinpoint F3 HD103SJ 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive

Nope, agree with jdeb here. WD Black, SATA 6.0.

Wireless
Newegg.com - EDIMAX EW-7128G IEEE 802.11b/g PCI Wireless Card Up to 54Mbps Wireless Data Rates 64/128-Bit WEP, 802.1x, WPA, AES

Also agree with jdeb here. The big advantage of the Rosewill, other than it's very inexpensive, is the antenna on a cable.

Sound
Newegg.com - DIAMOND XtremeSound XS71DDL 7.1 Channels 24-bit 96KHz PCI Interface Sound Card

Unnecessary for the initial build. Try the onboard sound first.

Video card
Newegg.com - EVGA 015-P3-1480-AR GeForce GTX 480 (Fermi) 1536MB 384-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card

Good card, if it doesn't blow your budget.

PSU
Newegg.com - Rosewill BRONZE series RBR1000-M 1000W Continuous@40°C, 80Plus Bronze Certified,Modular Cable Design,ATX12V v2.3/ EPS12V,SLI Ready,CrossFire Ready,Active PFC"Compatible with Core i7, i5" Power Supply

Absolutely not. The Corsair 650 that jdeb recommended is all you need, and is high quality. If you are planning on SLI, then you do need something around 1kw for a pair of 480's. The Corsair 950TX is certified.

Heatsink / fan thing?
(Came with mobo, do I need it?)
Newegg.com - Rosewill RCX-Z5 92mm Two Ball Bearing / FDBB CPU Cooler

Not needed. If you need a cooler for extreme overclocking, get a GOOD one. Heatsink does not come with the mobo, it comes with the CPU.

RAM
Newegg.com - CORSAIR XMS3 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 Desktop Memory Model CMX8GX3M2A1333C9

Excellent choice, I'll take it over the A-Data that jdeb recommended. This also leaves 2 slots open for a future upgrade.

Mobo
Newegg.com - ASUS P6X58D Premium LGA 1366 Intel X58 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

Agree with jdeb, but not with the LX board. I'd get a P7P55D-E, or if you ever want to SLI, a P7P55D-E Pro.

Processor
Newegg.com - Intel Core i7-950 Bloomfield 3.06GHz 4 x 256KB L2 Cache 8MB L3 Cache LGA 1366 130W Quad-Core Processor BX80601950

Get an i7-870, not a 860.

SSD
Newegg.com - OCZ Agility 2 OCZSSD2-2AGT40G 2.5" 40GB SATA II MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

The only SSD I fully trust is an Intel X25. However, the SATA 6.0 Crucial may be the performance king.

Case
Newegg.com - NZXT Phantom PHAN-001BK Black Steel / Plastic ATX Full Tower Computer Case

Case is a personal choice.

Thank you both for your input. I replaced the HDD, wireless, PSU, SSD, took out the sound card.

I also replaced the 480GTX with a 470.

I'm not sure about two things. For the processor, I'd really like as good of one as I can get. I'm not on budget for it. (~$500) Is there something wrong with the i7 960?

Also, I'm not going to right now, but I want to leave my SLI options open. Then what PSU/Mobo/Fan would I need to be ready to SLI two 470's?

Nothing wrong with the CPu but it is an X58 Chipset and they can be a pain to setup and get stable. If you are stuck on the X58 Chipset / CPU choice than go with this

The P6TD Deluxe is not SATA 6.0 or USB 3.0. I repeat my recommendation for an i7-870.

You would need a Corsair 750TX or stronger to SLI a pair of 470's.

You will probably find that 40gb is not large enough for your OS and apps. If you are going to do a SSD, do it right. That won't be cheap. Take advantage of the SATA 6.0 controller.

The case already comes with 4 fans, you don't need any more.

Ok, no SSD then. And for the fans, I was thinking about replacing a few of the stock case ones, and the big side one. $7 Isn't really much for something that I'll be happy to look at every time I turn it on.

I'm not trying to budget now. I'm well below my range. I'd just like to know if the setup works.

Looks like a great rig to me.

If you ever think you may want three monitors then look at a single 5970 instead.

I'm suggesting this SSD:

With the release of the nVidia GeForce GTX 580 this week, you might want to consider one of those video cards instead of your current choice. I'm a big proponent of one high-end video card as opposed to two middle-of-the-road cards in SLI (because of scaling and the need for specific driver updates). In any case, at least read the reviews for the GTX 580s. They all say that the GF110 is what the GF100 should have been, and the GTX 580s are getting great reviews.

Problem is - the 580 is 550 bucks right now. You can get a Radeon 5970 for under $500 that will blow it away. If you really want a 580, wait till AMD comes out with their high end 6xxx cards - which will be SOON. The 580 prices will drop at that time.

Now we're talking, a 5970 for 500 bucks! For some, that just might make it worthwhile to not buy that almost $500 480 but to step up to a 5970.

Edit again - Sorry, I'm very indecisive.

The HD 5970 looks nice but... there's no HDMI port. Is VGA much worse? I don't have any VGA cables either.

And will it work with this mobo?

If all you have is an HDMI cable, then you can get a DVI to HDMI converter cable. Does your monitor have a DVI-D or DVI-I connection? If so, just get a DVI to DVI cable. Something like this.

I really don't recommend the LX board. In spite of what it says, it's not true SATA 6.0 and USB 3.0. If you will only be using one video card, get the P7P55D-E. If you will ever SLI or Crossfire, get the Pro.

What you need is a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter. Those can be found for under $10. However, if your monitor has DVI, just use that.

Ah, I see. Pro couldn't hurt. Would be bomb if I snagged another 5970 after the 6xxx come out. Is the P7P55D-E Pro true SATA 6.0 and USB 3.0?

Also, would you mind detailing what's different between i7 870 & 950? I've read that the 1366 socket is more future proof, and that the 950 has gotten better benchmarks across the board.

All the dash- E's are SATA 6.0 and USB 3.0, it's just the LX version is incomplete.

Benchmarks Desktop CPU Charts 2010

For gaming, the difference is immaterial. Check out the 3DS Max rendering times - 2 seconds difference on a 3.5 minute render. There are a few benchmarks where the 950 shows up to a 10% difference, but in most of them, the differences are commensurate with a 2.93 GHz versus a 3.06 GHz processor. Note that the turbo boost can get the 870 up to 3.6 GHz, but the 950 only goes to 3.33.

Futureproof or not, I still think the X58 is just too damn fussy. That's been the case for a long time with any of Intel's "X" series chipsets going all the way back to the 875X socket 478.
