Question: Should I upgrade now or wait? pcmech
Granted, I am fully aware the holidays are among us. Black Friday and other sales will be taking place. I read this months MaximumPC of Future Tech coming in 2011. Looks as if 1365 boards are right around the corner with new processors in tow. This current crop of video card seem to be able to hold there own for the next 2 years so I don't think I will be rushing the bleeding edge card just yet. However, since I am running the following setup for gaming:
Motherboard: EVGA 122-CK-NF63-TR LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 680i SLI ATX Intel Motherboard CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E6420 Conroe 2.13GHz LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Processor BX80557E6420 RAM: SKILL PI Black 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model F2-6400CL4D-4GBPI-B Graphic Card: EVGA 640-P2-N821-AR GeForce 8800 GTS 640MB 320-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card PSU: PC Power and Cooling S75QB 750W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Certified CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Power Supply compatible with core i7 [/size] CASE: LIAN LI PC-7B plus II Black Aluminum ATX Mid Tower Computer Case Should I upgrade now or wait? I was thinking of upgrading just my Graphic Card and waiting until March 2011 for CPU,MB and RAM upgrade. But I would hate to pass up a good sales this year! Any recommendations as to which path to consider? Last edited by Wyldstyle; 11-16-2010 at 03:48 AM. Reason: font resize |

You do need a new video card, but I'd wait till just after Christmas. We are in the midst of a rollout of the new generation cards, and by then the prices should drop on the current cards. I can foresee the price of a Radeon 5870 dropping to well under $300, and possibly a GTX 470 down close to $200.
I'd get some more life out of your motherboard - a processor upgrade to a E8400 would be significant. Newegg.com - Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 Wolfdale 3.0GHz 6MB L2 Cache LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Processor BX80570E8400 |
