Making New PC

Hey everyone,

So I am ready to start building a new gaming rig and I've picked out my parts. Before I make the purchase I just wanted to make sure that everything I am buying is compatible. I have attached an excel which has my build and links. So please take a look and let me know if you see anything out of place or missing.

If you think I can replace something on my list and still get amazing performance for cheaper please let me know.

amazing performance for cheaper... hmmm...

dont go with the 1366 platform. it is designed for the enthusiast, and is a rather large can of worms. you might find yourself spending hours trying to figure out bios settings that work. if you want a machine that you can just put together and have it work, go for the 1156 platform. 1156 is plenty powerfulfor all but the most extreme power users. the basic recommended setup is

i7-870
asus p7p55d-e
corsair/a-data/crucial ram @ 1333mhz

as for HDD, i recommend the wester digital caviar black, as many others here do.

1000 watts is complete overkill, and rosewill (afaik) is not a good brand. go with corsair or seasonic. 600 should be more than plenty, if you want to sli 2 of those gtx 460s, 850w will do you good.

on the OS note, do yourself a favor and compare the few extra features that ultimate has compared to home premium. if you dont need them, save yourself a hundred bucks or so and just get home. OEM is even cheaper, at the expence of support from microsoft.

also, not nagging or anything, but is much easier for us (other members of pc mech) to give advice if we dont have to download excell sheets, but i see that it was a template you used, so no biggie.

I am unsure of what version of OEM Windows 7 I need. It's either 64 or 32. Any recommendations?

Also did I pick the correct replacements?

Just rechecked the specs for the processor and found it is 64-bit.

If you're putting more than 4 GB of RAM, then you have to buy a 64-bit version of Windows. A 32-bit won't see more than 3 GB.

The Corsair 750TX is certified for two GTX460's. With Newegg's Black Friday specials, you can save a considerable amount by getting that instead.

Thanks for the advise glc. So I read that the Intel Core i7-870 runs very hot and the cooling system provided doesn't really work to well. Do you recommend any cooling systems to replace the one that comes with the cpu?

where did you hear that? my i7-870 never goes above 75c under 8 threads of prime 95 on the burn test. thats with the stock cooler. i have even OCd it to 3.3ghz and ran the same test reaching about 90c (too hot for me).

unless you OC, the stock cooler is fine.

Intel does not sell CPU's with inadequate coolers.

You still need to drop that possibly poor quality 1000 watt Rosewill PSU for the one glc recommended.

Hey,

I actually did replace the rosewill with the following:

Newegg.com - CORSAIR CMPSU-850TX 850W ATX12V 2.2 / EPS12V 2.91 SLI Ready CrossFire Ready Active PFC Power Supply

And I read the reviews on Newegg for the i7-870 which customers are saying it needs to be replaced.

If you want to believe every Newegg review you read then I'm not going to argue.

Using an aftermarket cooler will void the 3 year processor warranty. Build it stock, only replace the cooler if necessary later.
