The Works!
Hello everyone!
Been here browsing for a few weeks now. I'm trying to piece together a decent build. This is will be my first one. I'm coming off of a 12 year old Dell. I upgraded it as much as possible, but it died on me. I need everything for this build including - monitor, mouse, speakers, keyboard. I don't really have a budget in mine. I just need a rig that will be future proof. It will be used by the entire family(wife, 9 yr old, 8 yr old), but mainly by me. Not really into gaming, but might play a little in the very near future. My daughter will actually play more then I will. Other uses include internet, music, photo-shop, digital camera/video editing, watching and burning movies, etc. I came up with some ideas, that I've posted below. Can you please give your suggestions for my build. Thanks for your time. If you do want 8gb of ram, the 4gb x 2 kit would be preferable.
I would take advantage of the SATA 6.0 board and get a SATA 6.0 WD Black for the OS/program drive. I wouldn't bother with a 2nd drive yet - when the drive is about 75% full, then get a second drive and start moving files over to it. You will need speakers unless you run cables to your entertainment system or use headphones. The HIS 6850 is out of stock, the Diamond is in stock and is a good choice. There's a combo deal going now on that CPU and mobo. |

glc,
Is it necessary to have 8g of ram? I read on here that the computer will never use that much. quartet-man, thanks for the link. |

Windows 7 Home 64bit should be sufficient? Will I need any type of adhesive? |

Not really necessary for 8 gigs, but at the prices and with the quality of the rest of the build, you might as well get it.
I can't think of anything that you would need adhesive for. Home 64 bit is fine. |

No, 64 bit allows you to use more than 3.2GB but you do not need 8GB to run windows 7 64bit, 2GB will work, 4GB is optimal!

More RAM is only helpful when your applications start needing more than what is available. When an application has to start accessing the hard drive then that slows things down.

to clarify what david said about hard drive access, he is referring to the page or 'swap' file, which the OS creates as virtual ram on your hdd. if a program is forced to use this, its performance is crippled.

Today's onboard sound is very good. You will only need a sound card if you don't like the onboard sound for whatever reason.

Is it necessary for me to have the video card I posted above. Could I reduce my cost by using this one instead? Not really big into gaming. my daughter will probably play more then I will. Maybe in the future, but not now.

If you are not going to be gaming, the 4670 is plenty good.

I run an HIS 4670 in my rig and it games well enough. I play Oblivion and Dragon Age at medium to high settings on my Vizio 37" at 1920 x 1080. Your daughter will be happy. It's defintely not a top performer, but it's not shabby either. Of course mine is overclocked thru catayst control, and it's been that way for at least six months now with no hiccups whatsoever. I can honestly say its a great card(and priced right) for the casual gamer.

Good. I lost my XP/Vista dual-boot when I upgraded to W7 Pro 64-bit, and I used my XP Pro for games. I had read that Oblivion was not supported in Vista or 7 and so was reluctant to install it for fear it wouldn't run. OK, now I can have something enjoyable to do during the Christmas break. I love that game.

What about a wireless router? Right forum? Or should I ask over at the hardware forum?

Unless you need wireless-N, get a Linksys WRT54GL.

Please start your own thread, jas1. Thank you. Please give us a budget, what you will be using the computer for, and wait till you are ready to buy the parts.
