Black Friday Budget Build.
I was thinking about building my parents a super cheap computer, but then thought it might be cheaper to buy a black friday deal, since they usually come loaded with an OS. However I've always heard those black friday deals have pretty low quality components.
I'm looking to build a computer for as cheap as possible. Computer only really needs to be able stream youtube videos, upload pictures, and browse the internet. I just build an AMD system and I'm pretty happy with it, I'd like to build another AMD system. I like ASUS a lot but I do realize that ASUS costs a bit more. Think we can put together a really simple but good quality build for around $200? I was thinking about just going with this cheap barebone kit on Tiger: MSI 785GTM-E45 Motherboard and AMD Phenom X4 9850 Quad Core Processor and Thermaltake TR2-R1 Socket AM2/939/754 CPU Cooler and Seagate Barracuda 1TB Low Power Hard Drive and LG GH22NS50B DVD Wr Bundle at TigerDirect.com |

Definitely would like a small case. Just want a single dvd burner and an 3.5" drive bay for a card reader.

Tiger stinks and expecting a $200. computer is not realistic. Is it possible? Maybe, but so would be finding a used car for $200.

Alright well how cheap could I do this build?
So maybe I should have gotten a black friday deal? Should I just buy the cheapest components on newegg? What about these Intel Atom machines I'm seeing? They're pretty cheap and they basically seem to be desktop netbooks which I think might be enough for my parent's limited computer usage. |

You aren't going to do any better than that $299 Dell. Note that it has Win 7 HP, all you need to add is a monitor. If you buy the cheapest components at Newegg you will probably wind up with an unreliable piece of junk. I wouldn't touch the cheap HP's, Acers, Gateways, and E-Machines with a 10 foot pole. The Atom machines aren't any cheaper.

stay far away from my house glc.... (1xHP, 3xAcer, 3xGateway, 5x emachine) granted all of those except one emachine has been replaced with asus laptops and custom built machines... but still.... stay far away.....
400 is about the lowest you can go and get decent parts.

There is no point in purchasing POS parts because a computer that does not work is a complete waste of money. You would get more out of the money by converting it into one dollar bills and throwing it into the fireplace on Christmas morning, at least it might heat the room a little.
Or you could go ahead and build it and remind them with a note that says, "It's the thought that counts".

Now I'm starting to wish that I would have bought one of best buy's black friday emachines, but I wasn't in the camping mood. That Dell sounds nice, I found a pretty nice AMD system on the dell outlet, however I have a pretty bad history with Dell so I'd rather stay away.
Guess I'll just tune their current system a bit, that should hopefully last them until next year. |

I also won't touch Dell's AMD machines. They only offer them to satisfy the hardcore AMD fans and to make price points. They do not use very good components in them, unlike their Intel machines.

This is a quick list I came up with. Feel free to correct/change anything. It totals $301.26 after shipping. I didn't include an OS because I wasn't sure if you'd need one.
CPU: Intel Celeron E3400 MOBO: ASUS P5KPL-AM EPU RAM: G.SKILL 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) PSU: Antec EarthWatts Green EA-380D Green 380W HD: Western Digital Caviar Black WD6401AALS 640GB Case: Rosewill MicroATX Mid Tower |

Pretty good start, thanks. Was wanting an AMD build though.
Anyone have any opinions about this barebone kit on the tiger, I usally prefer other retailers but $249 for quad core 4gb RAM and 1tb HDD looks pretty good. ECS A740GM-M Motherboard and AMD Phenom X4 9450e Quad-Core Processor 2.1GHz and Cooler Master Fan for AMD CPUs and Centon 2048MB PC6400 DDR2 and Seagate Barracuda 1TB Low Power Hard Drive and S Bundle at TigerDirect.com |

ECS is junk. So is Centon. Barracudas have been dropping like flies. Tigerdirect pushes a lot of garbage.
Alanebro gave you good components, save for the RAM. Just switch G.skill to A-Data.
