Cheap Gaming Build -- Need Suggestions

Hey everyone,

A friend of mine is looking to get a cheap gaming comp. He mainly wants to play SCII with medium/high settings. Budget is 600.00 USD, no monitor needed, keyboard, mouse, or speakers needed.

Generally when I build computers I stick with slightly more expensive brands that I know are really reliable. Unfortunately, I'm unfamiliar with some of the less expensive reliable brands, if anyone has any suggestions, they will be greatly appreciated.

I'm still trying to find specifics on what specs he wants. He mentioned the GTS450, dunno if that is necessarily a fine choice though.

I went with this as opposed to a 39.99 (+10.00 s/h) one because it has free shipping so it cost the same :P

Thanks in advance,
-Mike

i know from experience that the gts 450 can handle sc2 just fine on max settings (and WoW on ultra @ 1920x1080). whether it plays smoothly is a balance between cpu/gpu. i would suggest nothing less than an athlon II x4, the i3 should do well also.

Or you can go with what glc suggested but change the processor and motherboard to these:

Processor AMD Athlon X2 Regor 255

Asus Motherboard

Now you have enough to buy an OS for your budget

but can that athlon x2 handle sc and keep the videocard fed?

if you can spare the extra 20 bucks, Newegg.com - AMD Athlon II X3 445 Rana 3.1GHz 3 x 512KB L2 Cache Socket AM3 95W Triple-Core Desktop Processor ADX445WFGMBOX

His graphics card will still be the posted speed limit.

That's why I suggested a GTX460. It's the 768mb version, but it runs full speed.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys.

He just told me today that he wants MAX 600.00. Pretty much anything that can run SCII on Med/High.. Anything more is unnecessary... I told him that was stupid, but he won't listen :O

I like GLC's list, so if there are any possible downgrades from that, we'll be set. Otherwise I'll tell him he's SOL.

Thanks again,
-Mike

I would recommend an X-Box then. This will leave him enough money to buy a few $60 games. Your friend will not be seeing a list with a bunch of POS parts coming from this website.

I'm not looking for "POS" parts, I would never waste my time building a time bomb (a computer waiting to fail).. He just don't need anything in excess of running SC with med/high..

This computer is versus not having one at all, hence he don't need anything "extra". If it was my choice, I'd just make the best of the best and not worry about it for awhile

Tell the cheap SOB to cough up an OS.

Newegg.com - Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit 1-Pack for System Builders - Operating Systems

If he can't swing $681, buy it without the video card for right now and get that later. The computer will work with the onboard video. It won't game very well, but it WILL work.

GLC,

Any specific reason you chose a Micro ATX mobo over a regular one?

Exactly. To get the same quality and features in a full size board will cost you more. You will never use up all the slots on the micro board anyway.

Sorry, but I honestly think if you are going for a cheaper gaming computer, AMD is the way to go. This also means switching over to an ATi card.

AMD and Intel are both great, but they both have their uses.

Intel tends to be a little more powerful, but considering price is clearly a factor I think it would be wise to switch. Just a suggestion.

Why would he have to switch over to an ATI card? Nvidia cards work fine in AMD motherboards.

Matt, just for your info, Tom's Hardware rated the i3 as the best gaming processor for the money.

Ya, but if he is considering SLI then he will be at a dead end. I personally just like to keep AMD with ATI and Intel with nVidia.

He could also do CrossFire on Intel, so no dead ends there.

He isn't going to SLI with the recommended motherboard anyway. It only has one slot. I hardly think someone with a $600 budget is looking at either SLI or Crossfire anyway.
