new build compatibility
since I'm considering a new build I feel this is the correct forum to ask these questions. I want to know if my software will be compatible with Win 7. Everything I have now is for XP. Will my older games work on 7. i.e. Mafia, Half life 2, the CoDs and so on. Will my Word program work? How about my current printer/scanner and other hardware? I have flight sims and the like. How much of a change is W7 anyway and is it better than XP? Thanks

Looking at parts now and just want to say that I'm not interested in using two video cards. Onboard sound is fine with me too.

If you are concerned about compatibility, get Win 7 Pro which allows you to run XP in a virtual machine.

does that mean I have to buy XP in addition to Win 7 Pro, or can I use my old version of XP home?

Neither, as far as I know. XP compatibility is built in as far as I know. I think it is similar to the old Win 95 /98 compatibility mode in XP, but could be wrong.

Neither. XP mode in 7 Pro allows you to run a special free downloaded copy of XP in a virtual machine.

In my experience the vast majority of software that was written in the XP era also runs on Windows 7.
