Laptop (not Netbook) for Travel

I take a trip to China about once a year. I have a Think pad T60 (Intel T2500 2.0GHz Core Duo) as my main computer, at 6.5 pounds and 13" x 10.6" x 1.4" it was too heavy, big and just not convenient for that long trip, especially in your carry on. I bought an Asus eee pc 900 (900 MHz Intel Mobile CPU), at 6.7 x 8.9 x 0.8 inches; 2.2 pounds, it was great travel material. However, it was so slow I could not get any work done. My wife thinks it is ideal as she uses for email and web only. Actually, that is what the netbook is made for, and it was less than $300.
I need something in the middle of these 2 in size, with a good processor for work, like spreadsheets, Access DB and some HTML programming. I think this would be in the laptop range not net book. I am in the middle of building a desktop, so my budget is between 300 and 350, closer to 300 if possible.
I think I would like to build one, however, I see very little information on building laptops.
Are these reasonable expectations? Any suggestions?

You cannot save any money by trying to build a laptop, and you will have no support if anything goes wrong. Your budget is very unreasonable for any kind of quality laptop with any kind of performance. You are going to need to spend over $600 to get a decent lightweight laptop.

Newegg.com - ASUS UL20 Series UL20FT-A1 NoteBook Intel Core i3 330UM(1.20GHz) 12.1" 2GB Memory DDR3 1066 320GB HDD 5400rpm Intel GMA HD

Lightweight Lenovos are over $800.

Thanks for the info

I will recover from my current desktop build and start to budget for a lightweight laptop.

its not the lightest around, but it works very very well for me. 6lbs, great for the price.unfortunately they are sold out.
Newegg.com - ASUS P50IJ-X3 NoteBook Intel Pentium dual-core T4500(2.30GHz) 15.6" 4GB Memory 320GB HDD 5400rpm DVD Super Multi Intel GMA 4500M

really is a good machine, + 1year accidental damages warranty for free is just awesome. i would grab one when they come back.

dont let the pentium dualcore scare you away, the performance of this machine is superb for the price.

Nikon, that would be a good idea, but that's a 6 pound laptop with a 15.6" screen. He says his T60 is 6.5 pounds, and the specs I see online say it's 5 to 6 pounds and has a 14 or 15" screen. The UL20 I linked is 3.3 pounds and has a 12" screen.
