Hi so my story is im buying some components to boost my PC up ALOT.
Here is a list of the items im planning to put together can you please tell me if its possible and it will run, also will it run Windows 7 64? (I've already got a SATA HDD and 750W PSU) First the Motherboard: Scan.co.uk: Gigabyte GA-P55A-UD4 Intel P55 Express 1156 Motherboard Processor: Scan.co.uk: Intel CPU i7 870 Quad Core Processor - BX80605I7870 RAM: Scan.co.uk: Corsair Memory Vengeance 8GB DDR3 1866 MHz CAS 9 XMP Dual Channel Desktop - CMZ8GX3M2A1866C9 GraphicsCard: Scan.co.uk: Gigabyte GeForce GTX 460 Super Overclock 815MHz 1GB NVIDIA Graphics Card - GV-N460SO-1GI Also: I'm having concerns about powering the CPU, it gives a 2x4 port on that and my power supply i use now has 2 2x2 cables, do i just plug them both in next to eachother to fill the 2x8 port or do i need a 2x4 lead? (meaning i have to buy a new PSU) Hope you can help asmuch as possible. THANKS! ~Ash |

in short, your PSU should have no problem powering that system. as far as the connectors for CPU power, the 2 4pin connectors are different if you look closely, the shapes and orientations of the pins will make it so you can only plug them in one way.
how old/what brand are you PSU and HDD?

Thanks for the support on that, just wanted to know if you can use 2 seperate 2pin's to power an 8pin socket, i looked around for more info and found exactly what you said, any info on the system im preparing to build?
Power supply isnt too old and is rather new, it's got great SLI and is a decent supply in know that, as for the HDD is MAXTOR 120GB and rather old. Much appreciated. ~Ash Last edited by Ash-; 12-25-2010 at 07:49 PM. |

Scale back on your RAM to 1333. You will not notice any difference between 1333 and the 1866 you selected. Overclocked RAM can be finicky. Corsair is a good brand.

Are you sure your PSU doesn't have an 8 pin that splits into two 4 pins anyway? The 4 pin that's part of the 20+4 main connector can't be used there and a quad core really does need all 8 pins connected.

hmmm. my p7p55d-e pro has 8 pin cpu power, and my psu also has 8pin. one of them lines up (the one on the right on the mobo) and matches one 4 pin from the psu, but the other 4pin does not match (the socket on the mobo is all squares, while the ones on the psu cable are all 'D' shaped) the system runs just fine with just the one connected... is this bad?
