Save some money and get a P55 chipset board (Asus preferred) and a i7-8xx instead. This will use dual channel ram. You also don't need a 1kw PSU - and try for a better brand such as Antec or Corsair.

Switch to a 1156 socket and CPU with a P55 chipset...they are more reliable and pretty much as fast.
Pick an Asus board...more reliable. You do not need the Dominator RAM. 4 gigs of DDR3 1333, 1.5 volt RAM is fast enough. A 1000 watt PSU is overkill unless you are getting two cards and two cards is not in your budget I would look at either a Corsair 550 or 650 watt PSU depending on which card you choose. You still need to add an optical drive and an operating system to your budget. Any chance of cashing in your gift certificate so you can buy from Newegg or Amazon?

I dont have a problem going on i7 950 if it does fit in my budget, but if it will have a better performance I would go to i7 8xx. Can you tell me what's the difference? xD I know it's much cheaper, I guess. I would go to ASUS, please feel free in revising my rig. thank you so much sir!

Go ahead and post the 9 basic computer parts that you think you may want with Newegg links. People will then make recommendations, hopefully with explanations on changes to these parts. Your job will then be to keep the parts list updated, by occasionally posting all your parts in one post.

Not what he wants, David. He specifically asked for a GTX470, and Best Buy links.

We picked nearly the same parts.
He also said he has cash to spend to make up the difference, hopefully not at Best Buy. It's a $1500 budget with an $850 gift certificate. lmlilclxl, Unless you have a relatively small monitor, with your $1500 budget you are limiting yourself with a GTX470. This card has a crippled Fermi GPU. You may want to have a look at the 570 or the 580 which have a fully functional Fermi. This is why it is better... http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/...ance,2806.html Last edited by David M; 12-27-2010 at 12:25 PM. |

glc does not select junk. Where are you reading your reviews from? I'm going to guess Newegg. glc has built more computers than the kids doing the reviews in Newegg have ever seen in their lives.
The card is your choice. I was just throwing out ideas. I'm not sure what running in high performance means...sorry. Last edited by David M; 12-27-2010 at 02:42 PM. |

I'm intentionally selecting an Asus video card instead of a PNY. I only recommend Asus or EVGA for Nvidia cards.
Newegg.com - ASUS ENGTX570/2DI/1280MD5 GeForce GTX 570 (Fermi) 1280MB 320-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card That Asus motherboard is definitely not my first choice, but Best Buy does not carry the P7P55D-E Pro, which is my preference. The bad reviews on the P7P55D-E board are probably due to its useless implememtation of SATA 6.0 and USB 3.0. If you leave both them turned off the board works fine. Newegg.com - ASUS P7P55D-E Pro LGA 1156 Intel P55 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard I'm sure you can blow $850 at Best Buy before you buy the motherboard and graphics card. 1. Corsair PSU but I chose 800W coz im planning to get the GTX580 as what David said. PSU link: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Corsair+...&skuId=1073715 2. Samsung Monitor LED (21.5in) 1920x1080 resolution. 3. 1TB WD Caviar Black SATA 32MB|Mo Cache 7200 RPM 4. RAM 2x 2GB Corsair DDR3 1600MHz compatible w/ DDR3 1066-1333MHz what i lack now is the MoBo, Graphics Card, CPU, Casing. And do I need to buy a Network Adaptor? I have $240 left on my gift card. I'm planning to buy the Graphics Card, CPU, and Casing online in NewEgg or which site you prefer have great service and policy when something gets wrong. I also want to make my 1TB HD as my secondary hd and buy another 60GB or 80GB as a primary storage for OS and other programs. Last edited by lmlilclxl; 12-28-2010 at 08:59 AM. |

The motherboard has built-in Ethernet. You only need an adapter if you are going to need wireless, which is NOT a good idea for a game server. If you want a 60 or 80 gb drive for OS and programs, get an Intel SSD.
Newegg.com - Intel X25-M SSDSA2MH080G2K5 2.5" 80GB SATA II MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) The GTX 580 is still overpriced (over $500) for what it is, and Newegg doesn't have any good brands in stock. When you start spending more than $300 for video cards, the performance increase per $$$ starts tapering off quite a bit. |

The official minimum requirement from Nvidia for a PSU powering a GTX580 is 600 watts. I would be a little nervous expecting a 600 watt PSU over time to power a fully functional power hogging Fermi GPU. In that case I would buy nothing less than a 700 watt PSU, but that's just how I am in liking a slight overkill with PSU's, because of negative experiences with power supplies in applications outside of computers that I have had. There are boxes that convert one type of power to another type of power all over the research boat I captain for a living. In my opinion it's never a good idea to come close to maxing out any electronics over a long period of time. When metal gets hot its resistance increases. When the resistance increases the voltage drops. In order to compensate for the voltage drop, the current must increase in order to provide the same amount of power. As more current is drawn more heat is produced which is a cascading effect that eventually burns something up. You never want to come close to burning something up unless its a hobby like overclocking where if you burn something up it is still an easily replaceable loss. Therefore if something like your PSU fan becomes less effective from hair or dust or a fan motor getting weak, with a PSU that is close to being maxed out, it will be likely that your PSU will burn itself out if any smart circuitry does not shut down the PSU first. glc and I have a philosophical but respectful difference about this topic. I tend to be on the more conservative side about creating a greater difference between actual load and maximum allowable load. The 580 is indeed a very nice card that rivals the 5970 in a lot of ways. I question though its practical use. Because a card that powerful is overkill for a single monitor, unless you have a 30 inch 2560 x 1600 monitor that can use all that power. As you know, with Nvida, you need two of their graphics cards to have a dual or triple monitor setup. This means you would need to buy a second matching 580 card to have more than one monitor....since matching cards is an SLI requirement. And then you get into the problem of most games not supporting three monitors in SLI. Last edited by David M; 12-28-2010 at 11:40 AM. |

glc, what do you think? would it be better if i change it to 650w or 700w? I only have a Samsung LED 21.5inch monitor and I would just buy the ASUS GTX 570 coz the 580 is too much for my budget i think. |

Keep the one you have of course. It never hurts to have too much power, except in the pocket book.
Which brand and model did you buy?...just curious. Besides price, the 580 is way overkill for a single 21 inch monitor. Last edited by David M; 12-28-2010 at 05:59 PM. |

PSU i bought: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Corsair+...&skuId=1073715
im suppose to buy the 23inch LED monitor but chose the 21.5 inch coz when i looked at them the 21.5inch has more detailed picture, they have the same resolution 1920x1080. i believe that the 23inch led monitor stretched out the resolution coz it's wider and so the 21.5inch monitor is more detailed, but im not sure about that, i just assumed that by looking at them, will the graphics card enhance the graphical interface? i'll replace it if it's better.

1920 x 1080 is a really good resolution. As long as the image looks good to you, that's all that counts. Your right, for the same resolution, a larger monitor is going to have pixels that are more spread out making it look more blurry or pixelated when close to the monitor.

I am using 2 x 24" Asus VK246H 2ms GTG monitors and I am running them at 1920 x 1080, the picture on them is perfect and you can't beat the details, I am currently playing SC2 and it looks perfect with those monitors!

@Khalil, that's a cool monitor, if i knew that before buying mine, i would have bought that instead of the samsung monitor, that ASUS monitor got webcams in it. cool!
this is what i bought http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Samsung+...&skuId=1100519 i think my monitor has 2ms response time too, good for FPS games they say. ![]() @David thnx, in that case i will not replace the 21.5inch monitor i bought, but if you would suggest that the 23inch monitor would be better, i will have it replaced.

You sure that the Corsair "Gaming Series" is up to their usual quality standards? Since they came out with the CX "Builders" series I'm a bit leery of anything they have other than the proven good AX, HX, TX, and VX series.
