Computer Crashing ? Help ?

Hello,

I have built/fixed a handful of computers so this was not exactly my first build. I have come across a few problems here, and there.. but I am not sure what to do next about this one.

I just built this new computer. Here are the specs:

AMD X6 1090t
Asus crosshair IV mobo
6gb 3x2 ddr3 1600
ocz vertex 2 90gb SSD
xfx radeon hd 5850
2 2tb sata hd's

windows 7 premium

So anyways.. I got the computer up and running. No problem.. This was my first time building one in a while, and kinda seemed like the easiest one so far. So anyways.. not long after I got it up and running I stepped out of the room, and caught it rebooting itself. I don't know what caused this, and it hasn't done it to me while I have been using the computer. So I downloaded Passmark burnintest and the performance test. I ran both a couple times.. computer passed, and did not crash while doing either test. So I figured that was good.. well its been a couple days and I have been using it no problem, but just now I left the room... screensaver went on or whatever, and the thing rebooted itself again... I also installed the asus pc probe.. cpu is running at avg 40c so that seems fine..

I have no clue what is causing this, but windows did keep a file. Here is what I got when I booted back up:

Problem signature:
Problem Event Name: BlueScreen
OS Version: 6.1.7600.2.0.0.768.3
Locale ID: 1033

Additional information about the problem:

*One more thing. This may be related or may not be, but I would like some advice if anyone has any suggestions.

-One of the plugs for the video card seems to have some sort of problem. The top DVI(i think) plug. I pluged in my monitor to it, and I got flcikering on bootup and shut down. So finally i plugged into the bottom port and it was all fine. Any ideas on what this may be, and what I should do about it ? Is there a program to test your gfx card and make sure it is running as it should be (I did buy battlefield bad company2) ?

Thanks for help let me know if I forgot anything

What is the brand and model of your power supply? What is the brand of your ram?

I would run diagnostics on your ram and your hard drives.

You should not be using 3 ram modules, and that could be part of the problem. You have a dual channel board, not a triple channel board. Use 2 or 4 modules, all matched.

Hello glc thanks for the reply

The PSU I have is the Corsair HX850

Ram is CORSAIR DOMINATOR 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model CMP6GX3M3A1600C7

Is there any specific software you recommend to run diagnostics ?

*You wouldn't happen to know where I could find a single stick of this ram to purchase would ya ? Only single stick newegg has with this model/timings is a 4GB

Not sure on the single stick, but the best thing to do for now would be to just pull one of the three sticks and see if it stabilizes the machine while only running 4gb of ram. Check the motherboard manual - it should tell you which slots to use if you are using 2 sticks.

Test the ram with Memtest86+. Download hard drive diags from the hard drive manufacturer - you didn't say what brands yours are.

I agree - pull the 3rd stick. If it stabilizes, then figure out what you want to do.

Ok guys. Thanks for the help here !!

I downloaded memtest86 and ran 4-5 tests I think. I got Pass 1 Errors 0. Not sure how long the recommended running time is ? I read somewhere to leave it on overnight so perhaps I will do that later.

I left the 3 sticks in for the test to check. I hope that is not bad, but taking the third out as you guys recommend. Is it a performance issue using 3 sticks instead of 2 or can it actually harm your computer ? I sure hope I didn't screw anything up

*There was however one problem I did notice so maybe this is it. While the test was running I noticed my ram speeds were not correct. Here is what was listed:

Settings: RAM 666 MHz DDR 1333 / CAS : 9-9-9-24

-Now I believe my ram is suppose to be faster than that, and the CAS timings are also listed as CAS7 instead of 9. Do I need to fix this in BIOS ? Is this a problem, and how do I fix this ?

My hard drives are:

OCZ Vertex 2 OCZSSD2-2VTXE90G 2.5" 90GB SATA II MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

and my 2 storage drives are

SAMSUNG Spinpoint F4 HD204UI 2TB 5400 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal
Hard Drive -Bare Drive

Not sure the best HD diagnostic tools are or how to use them. I did see a HD test on the passmark performance utility though. I will also look around on the manufactures sites more. On my first search for the OCZ diag i ended up with a diagnostic tool called atto, but was not sure how to use it or what to do with the data it came up with.

Thanks again for the help

Took out the other ram stick, but still getting errors here and there. Again streaming video like from youtube or NFL gamerewind turn green screen somewhat often

Bigger problem I would say is the crashing issue still popping up. Maybe it is all my video card ? I guess I will try and RMA, but can anyone refer me to a place that might be able to diagnose the windows error I am getting

What speed, timings, and voltage is the ram running at now? Do you have the latest bios in the motherboard?

I went into BIOS and ran the "OC Tuner Utility"

I think it changed some things, but not sure I really should have done that because I think my CPU is overclocked now. I am going to watch the temp on it before I decide whether to keep it or not. Was this a good idea to do ? I have a stock fan... Also how do I reverse settings ?

One other problem is that I was not even able to achieve my goal in getting my RAM to the proper CAS 7 settings. Like I said I memtest showed my ram running very slow which I didn't like at all since I bought the faster RAM.

On my RAM stick it says:
6GB(3X2GB) 2048MB 1600MHz 7-8-7-20 1.65V ver7.1A 10481257
*Now I did take one stick out until I get a 4th to run dual channel correctly.

My problem now is I still don't think the RAM is running at correct speed. The OC Tuner Utility did chance the DRAM Frequency I see at the top as it now says "1237MHz" this is faster than it was, but it says it is 1600MHz ram. If it makes it run more stable/safe I can live with that.. I really don't know!

The main problem is the timings though. I specifically bought CAS7 ram after reading the timings were a important aspect of ram. Now when I go into

>DRAM Timing COnfiguration

-I get

DRAM 1st Information : 9-9-9-24-4-27-8-4

DRAM 2nd Information : 8-10-4-3-3-110-7.8ms-1T

Of course they list what those # are under which I have no clue, but could post back here. I am not sure if I am suppose to change both DRAM information's or what, but they are clearly not running at the CAS 7 timings that they are suppose to be right?

The Voltage says DRAM Volt. 1.66

* I did not update BIOS yet so it is at what it shipped with. At Top it says
"Crosshair Forumula BIOS Setup Version 1005"

*Funny as my CPU is actually running 1-3 degrees cooler according to Asus Probe utility ( 35-42c ) I do think the 35 range here is probably due to my window being open with the cold air coming in. It did jump up quite a bit ( 36 -->41c) while I was running the passmark performance test (CPU). Now that did not take long so I wonder if it would keep getting hotter and hotter or hopefully just stick at something safe.

fast ram with tight timings wont get you anything more than a higher synthetic benchmark score, you will not notice any impact in a real world scenario.

reset CMOS on the mobo. those utilities (atleast in my experience the auto OC ones) have a tendency to create really unstable overclocks. especially with ram, just let the mobo set the ram speed. afaik, speed and timings should be the same across all ram channels. this may be part of the problem.

Thanks Nikon

It was actually crashing before I did the auto overclock, but I am going to look for the updated bios and try to flash it. I will leave the settings alone. Hopefully the comp will run as smooth as it is now. Running much better than when I first booted, but I am thinking that may be due to taking out the third ram stick since my board is dual rather than triple.. was told having the 3 sticks made them run slower.

No way to test if the bios update will work though other than waiting it out to see if it crashes again. Really stinks, because I have no clue what it is and paid a good buck for all the parts
