Starcraft 2 PC
Hello everyone! I'm a new member and I am amazed at the vast amount of knowledge everyone who contributes here has! I built my first computer about 6 years ago and I have been running a macbook since my computer died. I am trying to build a computer specifically for running Starcraft 2. I plan to run Windows 7, should be interesting going back to windows since XP
I'm trying to stay on the cheap with a budget around $700. Here is what I've come up with.Motherboard: $109.99 ASUS M4A87TD EVO AM3 AMD 870 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard CPU: $159.99 AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition Deneb 3.4GHz 4 x 512KB L2 Cache 6MB L3 Cache Socket AM3 125W Quad-Core Processor HDZ965FBGMBOX HardDrive: $49.99 Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 ST3500418AS 500GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive Video Card: 169.99 ASUS ENGTX460 DirectCU TOP/2DI/768MD5 GeForce GTX 460 (Fermi) 768MB 192-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card PSU: $54.99 Rosewill Green Series RG530-S12 530W Continuous @40°C, 80 PLUS Certified, Single 12V Rail, Active PFC "Compatible with Core i7,i5" Power Supply Memory: $49.99 G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-12800CL9D-4GBRL Is this compatible? If anyone has any tips or other components that you think I may want to switch to please feel free to chime in. |

dump the hard drive, powersupply and memory.
Go with a Corsair, Seasonic, or Antec power Supply. With the Corsair, do not use the builders series. This would be a solid choice... Newegg.com - Antec EarthWatts EA650 650W Continuous Power ATX12V Ver.2.2 / EPS12V version 2.91 SLI Certified CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC "compatible with Core i7/Core i5" Power Supply memory, use Corsair, Crucial, AData, or Kingston. Newegg.com - Kingston ValueRAM 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10600) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model KVR1333D3K2/4GR When it comes to the hard drive, stick with the Western Digital Cavair Blacks http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136533 or http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136544 Last edited by jdeb; 01-03-2011 at 08:49 AM. |

the athlon II x4 runs scII fine on my bros computer, and this will help you spread a few more dollars to the videocard. the 460 is a great card, but the 1gb model is alot more powerful. they did more than just lower the available memory in the 768mb model, they disabled an SM, leaving it quite crippled in comparison.
as stated above, rosewill, gskill, and seagate are to be avoided for various reasons.

With the Athlon, would I be able to run max settings? Is it more the video card over the processor when it comes to gaming?

It's DEFINITELY the video card - and the GTX460 1GB is stronger than a 5770.

glc is right. The GPU will make a HUGE difference for gaming performance. The GTX460 1GB is one of the best gaming cards.
The Athlon II x4 is nice, but the Phenom II X4's are top-notch for gaming. It'll mop the floor with an Athlon in gaming.
