Ubuntu gaming pc on a budget

I am building my own pc for the first time, my budget is $850(or so). The machine will be for gaming and some 3d modeling, down loading movies, etc. My goal for this machine is to get the best I can for the money available now, but to be able to up grade easily to a beast. I plan on using an Insignia 32" HDTV as a monitor. I refuse to keep using windows, so I am making the jump to ubuntu( also new to ubuntu). Any insights, comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I think everything looks well so far, except the RAM. G.Skill has been having quality issues lately, therefore Corsair is highly recommended.
One of the main experts here should chime in shortly to further help you.
Also, the WD Blue drives are nice for average user desktop systems, but the WD Blacks are more recommended. You might get a Blue for backup though.
Rosewill cases are OK. (I got one before I joined this forum and learned more) However, you may look into a Coolermaster case instead, because my rosewill's speaker/beeper went out and the I/O button panel is lousy cheap. (I got an extra beeper)
I don't know how wireless keyboards & mice will work out-of-the-box in Ubuntu. You should start out with wired, unless you know otherwise.

The top rated cases are Lian Li, Antec, Cooler Master, Zalman, Silverstone, and Therlmaltake.

The MOBO you picked out has Dual PCIe 2.0 x16 slots for Crossfire X. I think there might be ways of getting that to work in Ubuntu, but when I goggled it I couldn't find out much. Therefore, you probably don't want that. Or do you want it for Windows maybe down the road?
You probably don't need that high end of a MOBO otherwise.
Do you want a MOBO with onboard video and do you want ATX or Micro ATX?
I'm guessing you want a full ATX, as they are more spacious and offer more all around.
If you decide on a mobo without onboard video, you should pick out another cheaper video card as an extra, just in case for trouble shooting or something like that. Probably NVidia as they have the best drivers for Ubuntu.

I was having a hard time with the motherboard. Is it not possible to run more than one graphics card in ubuntu? Or is crossfire something else? I was looking for a mother board that would accomodate a six core processor down the road and had a good amount of 6gb sata connections. Also I noticed a review calling this a "good Linux board" definitely up for suggestions.
Here is my updated build.

CrossFire is for ATi cards and SLI is for NVidia.
These are the 2 AM3 ASUS MOBOs that support SLI. (these are the only 2 I could find, they're a rare breed)
The one for $139 looks like a better gaming board = there's a review for Ubuntu in it's reviews.

I also found this thread about SLI in Linux you would be interested in.

Ok, I see what you mean, did some research and I have changed to the nforce mother board( and changed hdd to 3 gb sata). Do you think this is a good build or am I on the wrong track for what I am trying to accomplish?

ONLY get a NForce motherboard if you are going to SLI, otherwise get an AMD chipset. The only other option for SLI is Intel.

Is it worth it to sli? I have read in other places people using a "physics" card? What is my best option for ubuntu with amd chip for gaming?

A single decent Nvidia card on an AMD chipset board.

I don't think it's worth it. There's not enough coverage about support for SLI in Ubuntu.

I would however get a Phenom II X4 BE instead of an Athlon. It'll blow away an Athlon in the long run.
Newegg.com - AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition Deneb 3.4GHz 4 x 512KB L2 Cache 6MB L3 Cache Socket AM3 125W Quad-Core Processor HDZ965FBGMBOX
For the mobo I recommend this
Newegg.com - ASUS M4A89GTD PRO/USB3 AM3 AMD 890GX HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard
For RAM:
Newegg.com - CORSAIR XMS3 8GB (4 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) Desktop Memory Model CMX8GX3M4A1333C9
The PSU you picked has a good price on it now with the MIR. I'd get it.
The total comes to $656 without the keyboard and mouse. I'd look into a logitech.

Ok, those do look like some sick components. I have updated my list, but do you think the onboard ati video is ubuntu friendly? Heard that ubuntu doesn't like radeon.

Disable the onboard video and use a Nvidia card. In your budget range I'd get a GTX460 1GB.

Ok I've modified the Mobo as it had an extra slot for crossfire and that's not needed and here's what I've come up with:

you'll be using a dedicated card.

Here's the list optical:
iHAS524-T98A
Case LIAN LI Lancool PC-K58W
HDD WD7501AALS
ASUS MOBO M4A87TD/USB3
PSU 750W CMPSU-750TX corsair
RAM CMX8GX3M4A1333C9 Corsair 4GB x2(8gb)
CPU Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition
GPU ASUS ENGTX460

Logitech keyboard and mouse combo
you'll also have some rebates to fill out and a $10 gift card.
total comes to $857.91 before rebates. Not bad.
