Thinking of doing a little upgrade to this computer?

Hi all my first build got me wanting to do a little tinkering to this computer now.
It is an asus board that computers plus sold me before i realized working on these things is not that hard.It is an outdated board but it is new only about 6mths old to me so i will post some specs and see if you think it would be possable to upgrade this a little bit.
Here is the motherboard
asus m2n-e
ASUSTeK Computer Inc. - Motherboards - ASUS M2N-E

thinking about this processor would it work
AMD Phenom II X4 920 2.8GHz 4 x 512KB
Newegg.com - AMD Phenom II X4 920 2.8GHz 4 x 512KB L2 Cache 6MB L3 Cache Socket AM2+ 125W Quad-Core Processor HDX920XCGIBOX

the box says dual core ready but looking at the stuff on the site it looks like there are some am3 And +2's that would work.Is this right?
Would it be very hard to upgrade the processor it does not have to be quad core dual would probably work but it would only be 100 dollar upgrade right? Is that a pretty good bang for the buck?

Also if i do this now it would future proof this thing a few years right?
I mean make the computer last for a while right?Component wise anyway it will not be up to date as far as technology but it probably would be a solid machine?

thanks

Have you gone to the Asus support site and looked up the CPU support chart for that motherboard? It's very specific.

Phenom IIX4 920 (HDX920XCJ4DGI),2.8GHz,125W,rev.C2,SocketAM2+,Quad-Core ALL 5001
Due to Bios ROM size limitation remove LAN PXE ROM and change Crashfree3 to Crashfree

Yes, it will work, but make sure you have bios 5001 or newer and you do whatever that note says about the PXE and Crashfree. I don't know if you have to physically pull the ROM or whether you disable it in the bios.

I have been doing some reading on asus's web forums and it looks like the lan pxe and the crashfree are in the bios download.I hope so anyway i gues in a couple of weeks i will spring for it.Mayby it will make this computer last a little longer. The board was new they where getting rid of old stuff .I gave as much for that as i did for my board on my build i just did.

I will post when i get it if i have any problems.

Thanks GLC for all the help!!!!
