htpc build

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboB...SID=e1i8917r88
467.00. Is it worth it? What recommendations do you guys have. All I want to do is record TV shows and surf the web/email on the living room TV. Can I build something good for under 500.00?

Thanks for replies.

On the combo:

1. The PSU in that case is junk.
2. I'm not a fan of MSI motherboards.
3. 1066 speed ram will slow that i3 down a bit.
4. I don't trust Seagate drives at this time.

One other consideration is that the case will be extremely tight to work in. Unless you have fairly small hands you need to be careful when picking HTPC cases. Personally I like the Silverstone HTPC cases. If you want to save money and have a little more room to work with, a standard desktop style case would be my preference over the HEC in the combo. For the price and what this combo is, it's "ok" but price vs performance is iffy even at that price because of the RAM and motherboard, but mainly the power supply. Relying on that would make me nervous. I have built a couple of HTPCs now and I use full size ATX components for this reason. It's difficult to find a quality PSU in the smaller form factors unless your going with fairly quality Case / PSU combos like Shuttle.

Also another note on HTPCs, typically you want to pick your DVR software first and then work backwards. Mainly because they are picky about what tuning cards they will work with. Your AVerMedia for example is not a supported card by MythTV after a quick google search. Might want to check the supported cards for the software you plan to use.

An HTPC build is like building regular desktops used to be. Compatibility is still tricky with the tuning cards. We aren't talking not working optimally with the wrong parts, we're talking not working period. Something you do still need to think about with tv tuning.

Newegg.com - Computer Parts, PC Components, Laptop Computers, LED LCD TV, Digital Cameras and more!

What I am looking for is something along those lines with a TV tuner card... and a 1TB HD for DVR storage. Doesn't need to be AS powerful as that.. although if ya'll can come up with something LIKE that with a case LIKE that PLUS a TV tuner card (with remote) and able to fit it all in a box like that and keep it <1000 as much as possible I would be greatly obliged! Throwing it all to you guys!

Basically, I just want a machine I can game on my TV on, as well and record TV, watch movies, load my music to play through my surround sound on. I have a gaming rig downstairs as well.. but I think to LAN would be nice as well.

A case like this is almost a necessity.. I want it to look like a piece of home theatere equipment - not just a small computer.
