Considering building a computer for my mom
A long time ago, when Dell was best and 80 GB harddrives were exclusive, my mom bought a computer. That was about 7 years ago. Now she just got her masters in business and is about to have her birthday. The computer is running slow and I think its about time to get her a new one.
She uses the computer mainly for surfing the web, reading e-mails and the occasional video on youtube etc. She is what you would call a moderate computer user. So I set up this list of components, thinking that I might buy them. Monitor, mouse and speakers are already in place and don't have to be thought about. What do you guys think of the list? Anything that is under/overkill? Anywhere I could save money? Asus P7P55-M P55 S-1156 M-ATX Intel Core I5 760 (2.8 gHz) 8mb Corsair XMS3 DDR3 2GB 1333mHz (2x1 GB) Western Digital Caviar Black 640 GB (7200 rpm, 64mb catch) Asus Radeon HD 5670 1GB DDR5 Corsair GS 600W ATX12V (didn't find link on newegg, but corsair recommended this one for the gpu) Samsung DVD r/rw.... 22x SATA (think its the same one) Ace miditower gears 4 ATX Black (couldn't find a link) Windows 7 64-bit OEM The reason I couldn't find links is because I live in Norway and buy via a Norwegian site. I only linked up to newegg for your convenience

Funny enough, no. I can't seem to find any :P But I have a similar optical driver in my computer and I'm happy with it. The places that actually have them don't ship to Norway.

Samsung Optical Drives (CD, DVD burners) are terrible for reliability. Krusader is recommending you get an Asus, if Asus is not available, Lite-on, LG or Sony will do the job nicely!

NOB Question – but wouldn’t an i5 be overkill for the needs of this user?

I would not get a video card or a 600 watt PSU, but I would get 4 gb ram. I would recommend a Sandy Bridge for this. Could you please post a link to your Norwegian site?

I would either buy parts from Amentio or Dustin home depending on their prices.
So you are recomending dropping the GPU, adding this (newegg) and getting, say, Corsair XMS3 4GB (2x2) 1333 mHz RAM? If I get that CPU, I would have to change to this (newegg) right? What PSU would you recommend with that? Last edited by Anomo; 01-22-2011 at 02:51 AM. |

Almost forgot! My mom is planning on buying Photoshop Elements so she can do some photoediting. Nothing heavy, but that might have to be considered!

PSE is not as demanding of a VC as PS or PS Extended. It all depends on your budget, if you have to save as much as possible, then forgo the video card. If you're not in dire straits, then add one. I would add one: I totally despise onboard. Always have. The only onboard thing I agree with is the NIC.

The Sandy Bridge onboard video is excellent.

I see there is some debate. For a person only using the computer for e-mails, web surfing, youtube and slight editing in PSE, is it better with on board video or a standalone gpu?
Do you guys think that the i5-2000 series has been tested enough to trust that it works with little or no faults? I have no problem spending an extra 200$ on a gpu, but saving some money is always nice :P And thanks for the list glc

Stand alone GPU hands down will always be a better option specially with Windows Vista/7 because of Aero. When you do not have a video card, your CPU has to do all the graphics processing. So even if you get a cheap ATI 5450, your performance will be boosted drastically because it frees up your processor to deal with other tasks.
Sandy Bridge does have an excellent video capability however it still will not replace the performance of a dedicated video card! I have tested Sandybridge and it is running good however to answer your question, no the platform is too new to say it has been tested thoroughly. I feel the 1156 platform is Intel's best ever chipset and I still recommend that! Last edited by Khalil; 01-23-2011 at 08:40 AM. |

Gigabyte make a good product and in Europe because of better consumer protection they have much better customer service and RMA. We have problems with them here in the USA because their support sucks!

We are no longer recommending the Corsair CX series. 430W will do yes but not the model you chose!

Going for the Antec PSU EARTHWATTS EA-430D Green 80 Plus or Antec TruePower New TP-550 550W wouldn't be a problem (or something similar). As I said, money isn't really a problem, but it would be nice to save a bit :P

For that use, I'd go with the Earthwatts. I'm not a fan of the Truepowers.

What's wrong with the Corsair VX450? It's only 550kr. I prefer that to the Antecs.

OOOOOOH!
When you said; "I would have picked an Antec for you but those look even more expensive there!" I thought you meant you preferred Antec over Corsair. Simple misunderstanding :P |
