memory in Win XP
I recently built a system from a Gigabyte 890FXA-UD5 motherboard, an Athlon quad-core processor, and 8 GB of RAM. Then it occurred to me that I'm running Win XP, a 32-bit OS. So I don't think I can use more than 4 GB. When I look at the system properties from the control panel, I see that it reports 3.25 GB of ram. So my question is, am I causing a problem by using 8 GB in the slots? And why reports only 3.25 GB instead of 4GB?
Thanks, Mike |

32-bit OSs can only use a little over 3G of RAM, the extra RAM won't cause a problem, it just won't be used by the OS. If you want to be able to use the whole 8G of RAM, you need to upgrade to a 64-bit OS. There is a 64-bit version of XP but I would recommend using Win 7 64-bit.

Thanks! I'll eventually upgrade to Win 7 so I'll hang onto the RAM.
