Looking for your advice and HELP.
After making all cables neat and secure then closing up the Cooler Master HAF 912 case and setting the BIOS to boot from the DVR/CD reader/burner first and WIN 7 CD queued up, the light on the CD goes on briefly and I get the following message: "Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device" When hitting "F8" for boot sequence and select CD a message flashes "Scan Devices ... No Device" ********************************************************* * Help How can I start building a WIN 7 sysem i.e. reading the WIN7 CD* ********************************************************* How can one slow down the display to read all messages? I made the following changes and adjustments (all with the same results): changed the CD/DVR reader-burner Changed SATR cables Switched them around (BIOS recognizes all devices) Changed SATA port where cables plug into Replaced Motherboard Hit "F8" to ensure boot is from CD device With each change the message and situation remain unchanged ********************************************** Mother Board: ASUS M4A88TD-V EVO/USB3 Extreme Design Processor: AMD Phenom II Black Edition DRAM: (MEMORY) XMS3 CORSAIR DDR3 8GB Intel 40G SSD SA2MP040G2K5 R SATA II MLC Internal -> plugged into SATA1 Western Digital Caviar Blue SATA 500 gb 7200 RPM -> plugged into SATA2 ASUS DVD/CD REWRITABLE DRIVE ----> plugged into SATA3 BIOS settings 1st priority boot device: CD ROM: (4M-ASUS DRW- )I have an ASUS DVD /CD The second boot device is an unformatted Intel SSHD which is enabled. Second Drive is Wester Digital 500GB All other BIOS settings are default value. Last edited by barth; 01-26-2011 at 09:59 PM. |

I would first try disconnecting that ssd drive and the hard drive and rebooting to see if the optical drive will boot then. There is also a sticky thread on how to trouble shoot a new build. It may be worth a try. The key is to eliminate as many factors as possible to determine which one is causing the problem. You seem to think it is the disc. Have you tried another bootable disc?

My solution would be rip the disk on another computer and set yourself up a bootable USB thumb drive. USB booting is much much faster anyway, and if that doesn't work then you will know there is nothing wrong with your dvd copy of windows.

Sounds good. BUT I don't know how to do it --How do you set up a thumb drive that is bootable? Would BIOS accept a thumb drive? |

First you need a 4gb or larger flash drive, this worked for my bootable external HDD so it should work on a flash drive also. If not someone correct me and I will post a link to usb boot that worked on my xp machine.
Right click computer and click manage, click on disk management, find the usb drive and format it make sure you make it fat32. When formatting is finished right click on the thumb drive in disk managment and mark it as active, you are done with the flash drive now. Now use a program like power iso to rip an iso image of your windows 7 dvd, Open the ISO file and copy the entire dvd directory to your usb drive. Insert it in the new computer and set your bios to usb boot enabled, make sure your usb is first in the boot order and then exit saving changes. Boot up and you should be good to go. It's bad luck to bundle your wires and close up your case before starting your new computer for the first time.

Check the BIOS and see if the "USB Flash Drive" option or something similar exists.
Woa, triple whammy!

David,
I should have spoken to you first. The wire arrangement was magnificent, took long to set all up and about 5 minutes to rip down. Bummer.... |

Just Built PC and can't load OS (Win 7)
After assembling my PC, tried to load from DVD/CD rom - One of two things happened:
1) DVD/CD reader would not read -or- 2) DVD/CD reader would read go into Win7installationand crash after 10 to 15 minues with error message something like this ~ 0xc80070017. I and most others thought it was a faulty DVD/CD -- it wasn't. The problem was the BIOS setting. Because I had a solid state hard disk I had set BIOS for "On Chip SATA Type tro "AHCI" (this is what Gigabyte MOBO tech suggested). When I changed the setting to IDE I was able to load WIN7 and move on with my life. Thanks to you all for you help/support. Barth
