win 7 upgrade, BB wants 400

Best Buy wants 400 to upgrade my Vista laptop to Win 7. They claim "you WILL run into problems if you do it yourself."

The only reason I am talking to their Geek Squad is that when I bought the Laptop I was grandfathered in for the Win 7 upgrade. They told me they would do the upgrade free when I got the disc. Now they want 400.

Can't I just boot windows to the desktop, insert the disc, select upgrade, reboot, done?

I did my two laptops by zero-filling the hard drive (got rid of the factory junk) booting from a Win 7 64bit.home Premium (oem) then going to the mfgr's site and downloaded the drivers. You need to be sure they have drivers available first.

If it runs vista it will run windows 7 just fine, BB are full of crap!! If it is a Toshiba though you might run into issues with AHCI settings as some do not have a way for you to change it to IDE/SATA in the bios so you can install from an OEM windows disk.

This is an update disc mailed to customers who purchased a new laptop/desktop just prior to the new stock of computers that would include Win7. They needed to move the Vista machines, but knew people would wait for Win7, so they slapped a sticker on the machines that read, free Win7 upgrade...

The win7 disc comes in the mail, and is supposed to be for the computer you purchased.

I don't think you can do a clean install, only upgrade.

Do you have this Windows 7 disc?

You can still do a clean install of Windows 7 on that machine. My take is that if Toshiba was willing to offer the upgrade for these units then Windows 7 will install and run without major aggravations.

Note that you will lose the recovery partition if you do a clean install, but if you're changing OSes, then you will no longer need that partition anyway.
