Building a 2nd home rig

I've got a vidio card & PSU that I want to build a 2nd rig around. It will be used for internet & multiplayer games(Civ4 & COH) networked to my Q9550 rig. Please give suggestions for MOB & CPU as previous ones I have are no longer availiable. My budget is <$400.00 Here's what I have:
saphire 4670
Newegg.com - SAPPHIRE 100255HDMI Radeon HD 4670 512MB 128-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card
corsair 450w
Newegg.com - CORSAIR CMPSU-450VX 450W ATX12V V2.2 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Compatible with Core i7 Power Supply
WD 500 caviar black
Newegg.com - Western Digital Caviar Black WD5002AALX 500GB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive

I've already picked out this case:
Newegg.com - COOLER MASTER RC-692-KKN3 CM690 II Basic Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

AMD Phenom II 965 Newegg.com - AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition Deneb 3.4GHz 4 x 512KB L2 Cache 6MB L3 Cache Socket AM3 125W Quad-Core Processor HDZ965FBGMBOX
+
Asus Motherboard Newegg.com - ASUS M4A87TD/USB3 AM3 AMD 870 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 AMD Motherboard

or

Intel i5-2300 Newegg.com - Intel Core i5-2300 Sandy Bridge 2.8GHz (3.1GHz Turbo Boost) 4 x 256KB L2 Cache 6MB L3 Cache LGA 1155 95W Quad-Core Desktop Processor BX80623I52300
+
Asus Motherboard Newegg.com - ASUS P8P67 LGA 1155 Intel P67 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

The intel will cost more but since you are using a video card anyways the AMD system for a lot less will perform great for you. Both systems will fit your budget.
I noticed you did not metion RAM anywhere.

more

I didn't mention the ram because I have always used DDR2 in previous builds and DDR3 is cheaper now, I was waiting for MOBO suggestions before I decide on ram. Would this MOBO work w/ that intel sys?

The i5-650 system is not worth it.

This would be my Sandy Bridge choice to keep you under 400 bucks:

Newegg.com - ASUS P8P67 LE LGA 1155 Intel P67 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

Newegg.com - Intel Core i5-2500 Sandy Bridge 3.3GHz (3.7GHz Turbo Boost) 4 x 256KB L2 Cache 6MB L3 Cache LGA 1155 95W Quad-Core Desktop Processor BX80623I52500

Newegg.com - CORSAIR XMS3 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model TW3X4G1333C9

Your next upgrade would be the video card. The 4670 is a decent card for what it is, but it's not that strong a gamer.

Thanks GLC that sounds good. Is there a good vidio card that will work w/ my 450 watt PSU?

The strongest Radeon that ATI doesn't recommend more than 450 watts for is a 5770. The strongest Nvidia would be a GTX460. The 460 is a better gamer than a 5770, especially the factory overclocked 1gb models.

PLEASE NOTE that with a high quality unit such as a Corsair, you can probably run a stronger card without any issues. The minimum recommendations are for a heavily loaded system with an "average" quality PSU. However, I personally wouldn't do it.

sandy bridge uhoh

These items are on the way.
Newegg.com - ASUS P8P67 LE LGA 1155 Intel P67 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard
Newegg.com - Intel Core i5-2500 Sandy Bridge 3.3GHz (3.7GHz Turbo Boost) 4 x 256KB L2 Cache 6MB L3 Cache LGA 1155 95W Quad-Core Desktop Processor BX80623I52500

Should I send them both back or can I keep the MOBO and just send the CPU back & wait for the fix? They have both disapeared from newegg site.
Thanks!!

Send the stuff back and go back to the AMD build I suggested and save yourself a big hassle!

Just get yourself an 1156 package. The 1156 is good and will serve you well.

Use the SATA 6.0 ports only until Newegg gets the revised boards in for exchange. It's the boards that are bad, not the processors. The 6.0 ports work fine, it's the 3.0 ports that have the issues.

The only thing Intel based means is that the motherboard and the CPU are compatible, and you will not be able to swap Intel CPU's and motherboards anyway if the CPU's are different sockets or the two are the same socket and are incompatible in some other way. Besides, you don't want buy an old matching Intel socket when there is faster and better technology from Intel now....(and AMD).

A lot of hardware is swappable (hard drives, RAM, PSU's, optical drives etc) between Intel and AMD based computers except for the boards and CPU's. Even some aftermarket heat sink fans come with adapters for both AMD and Intel.
