Input on my upcoming Rig
I've attached a JPG with a screen shot of my checkout from Newegg with the items I plan on using to build my first rig. I already have a 450 watt power supply that I plan on using. Any input would be greatly appreciated.
I really don't use my computer for gaming as much as I use it for graphic design and dvd ripping/burning. I know some of the components may be overkill, but I want to make the best machine I can afford. Thanks in advance, ek |

You will need an OS and an optical drive. Change the HDD from blue to black. The blue is better for storage as it is kind of a cross between black and green.
If you are going to do a lot of graphic work I would recommend getting at least 1 TB and partitioning it so you have one part with the OS and programs and another for storage OR one 250GB for OS ++ and one 750 for storage. That way your work is less at risk if something should happen to your computer. I'm not quit sure if a 450W PSU is enough for the 460. It is a powermonster and makes a lot of heat. Heat will make the PSU put out less electricity thus possibly not enough for the computer to run. Also I'm guessing your room will be quit hot during the summer and the PSU will put out less wats. The 8GB RAM is an overkill, but if thats what you want then there is no stopping you :P

Would a 650 Watt Power Supply do the trick?
As far as the HDD, would it be better to install dual drives, one strictly the OS and the other for my work? NVM, misread you there, lol. Thanks for the help! Last edited by ek378996; 02-02-2011 at 06:52 AM. |

I'm not sure how much power you would need, but I'm almost sure that 450 is to little. Wait for Khalil or GLC for that one.

If you're willing to drop back to a 6850 you can use the 450 watt psu, provided it's a good one.
For the 6870 the minimum is 500 watts. Radeon HD 6850 & 6870 review edit : Corsair ram is compatible with that board and, for now, you should use that instead of GSkill which has been having problems.

Thanks, Pam! I think I'm going to stick with the motherboard as the reviews are great on it, I'm going to use an 850W PSU just to be safe and I've upgraded the tower to a full tower as I'm hearing the graphics card I am looking at is rather large. I've downgraded the ram to 4GB instead of 8 and decided to go with 2X500GB Black HDD's.
Is there anything I forgot or anything I should know before I purchase? For example, will these products work well together? I've posted an image of my updated Newegg cart. Also, what should my expectations be for this type of machine? Right now I am using a Gateway P171FX Ultimate gaming laptop . . I'm sure it will be a lot faster than this, but what should I expect? |

A WD Black is more suitable to your needs than the Blue.
G.Skill is to be avoided. Use Crucial or Kingston. If you're going to be using Adobe programs it's better to go with an nVidia card.

Spend the extra 30 bucks or so and buy a PSU you know for sure will work. Think of the hassles you will have to go through if a 450 or 500 does not work.

A Seasonic 620 would do nicely. Or an Antec EW 550.

Have you tried a Power Supply Calculator? It can get you in the ballpark...and personally, I always like to have a little extra for future upgrades. Edit: If you Google "Power Supply Calculator" you will get lots of options. Try a couple to get a 'second opinion'. Last edited by Preston; 02-02-2011 at 10:49 AM. |

You can cut that PSU back to the Corsair 650TX, which is on sale with a rebate right now.
