Cheap build for school, and some old games
Hi, thanks for reading.
My sister is asking me to price a new build for her husband, who is needing something for for his last few years of college, and maybe some games and movies, but primarily for classes. It needs to be able to run Office, Photoshop, and ArcGIS. I can have an extra OEM for XP lying around, but if we go with Windows 7 I'll need to order that. Let me know what you think, maybe I forgot something, or maybe I'm getting parts that could be substituted with cheaper items for similar performance, allowing us to get Windows 7 for the same amount? Thanks for all the ideas!!

G.Skill is to be avoided. Use Crucial or Kingston.
Why are you going with such outdated technology? The socket 775 is two generations old.

Hmm, used G.Skill in the past, was more than pleased, but I do use Kingston 90% of the time. I'll change that link, thanks.
You know of a comparable build for the same price? Not going for cutting edge, or future-proof, just something the he can afford that does what he needs it to do. His notebook that was 11 years old finally crapped out, so this older stuff is going to be a serious upgrade from what he was using last week.

I would step up to a socket 1156 build - and it WILL cost you more. You also need a video card for Photoshop or it's going to be a dog. That case has a known issue with the power button.
I need to ask you to post your MAXIMUM budget, please. |

Ok, thanks. I asked my sister for a maximum budget, hopefully she will get back to me early this morning and I'll go over some new parts.
It's been over a year since I built anything, so I'm a bit out of the loop. I was also looking for the cheapest stuff available while still providing a good pc experience. I'm still using the pc in my sig, and it still does everything I ask it to. Movies, tv, a little editing, some CoD and WoW. (lots of WoW actually ![]() But I know this is the place to go, you guys have been more than helpful in the past. Many thanks! |

Could you also find out what version of Photoshop he wants to use?
My main concern with socket 775 is the lack of an upgrade path. Those Exxx Celerons are actually very decent processors for what they are, but apps like the newer versions of Photoshop need more horsepower. You don't need an expensive video card, but the onboard video just won't work well. |

What do you think about this combo ?
Athlon II Quad-Core/4GB/1TB SuperCombo Newegg.com - Computer Parts, PC Components, Laptop Computers, LED LCD TV, Digital Cameras and more! And then adding a cheap video card. The tower is also a Cooler Master, not sure if this one also has reported issues with the buttons. My brother in law found this deal, and was asking me if this would be a better option than getting the LGA. I know he has CS 3, he might want to upgrade to CS 5, not sure. |

NOT a fan of Coolermaster PSU's, Patriot memory, or Seagate hard drives. No comment from me on AMD.
BUDGET, please? CS5 WILL need a video card, and Windows 7 is greatly preferred. |

Finally got an answer from my sister.
$450 - $500, will be using CS3. Needs everything, monitor, keyboard, mouse. I have an OEM for XP, but not Windows 7, that will lower the available amount for hardware. |

A video card is still needed, but doesn't have to be the greatest:
