Upgrade for son's computer
I'm going to gut my son's old P4/ XP box and replace everything with the following:
ASUS M4A79XTD EVO AM3 AMD 790X ATX AMD Motherboard Item #: N82E16813131402 73.99 after rebate AMD Phenom II X2 560 Black Edition Callisto 3.3GHz Socket AM3 80W Dual-Core Desktop Processor HDZ560WFGMBOX 105.99 CORSAIR XMS3 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Triple Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model TR3X6G1600C9 62.99 after rebate CORSAIR Builder Series CMPSU-600CX 600W ATX12V v2.3 Active PFC Power Supply Item #: N82E16817139019 54.99 after rebate Western Digital Caviar Black WD6401AALS 640GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive 64.99 EVGA 01G-P3-1561-AR GeForce GTX 560 Ti FPB (Fermi) 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support FPB Video ... Item #: N82E16814130604 249.99 Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit 1-Pack for System Builders - OEM 99.99 Total w/ shipping and tax: $827 ish Look okay? I went back and forth between i3, i5, and this cpu. For $105 I thought this was the way to go....but I'm open to opinions. It will be used for gaming and other general, non-demanding stuff. How's the future of this compared to an 1156 setup? Last edited by paJAMbla; 02-08-2011 at 05:52 PM. |

Your going to want to change the ram setup to a dual channel. That AMD system won't be able to utilize Triple Channel.
See this.. Newegg.com - CORSAIR XMS3 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model CMX4GX3M2A1600C9

Oh geez...thank you! I guess I should switch to a board that has SATA 6.0 and do the same with the hard drive? Any recommendations on a good, basic AMD board? Don't need a lot of bells and whistles. Will never use crossfire or SLI. I will need firewire for my video to DVD program.
I was looking at this change to motherboard and HD: ASUS M4A89GTD PRO/USB3 AM3 AMD 890GX SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 HDMI ATX AMD Motherboard Western Digital Caviar Black WD6402AAEX 640GB 7200 RPM SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive Last edited by paJAMbla; 02-08-2011 at 08:24 PM. |

If you buy this OS:
Newegg.com - Microsoft Windows 7 Family Pack/ Home Premium Upgrade - Retail 3 PCs you could also upgrade two other boxes. It comes with 32- and 64-bit versions. |

I would not get a CX series Corsair.
Newegg.com - Antec BP550 Plus 550W Continuous Power ATX12V V2.2 80 PLUS Certified Modular Active PFC Power Supply You also won't be able to utilize 1600 speed ram - 1333 is fine. |

Thanks! I've made the changes to memory and psu. I just wish there was a middle ground with the motherboard. I went from 74 bucks to 150 just to add the SATA 6gb/ USB 3.0. (and other features I'm not sure I'll need.) Is it really worth it? And is there a solid board that would give me the SATA/ USB upgrade at a better price?
