Help me build a new gaming PC for $1000-$1500 USD!

So it's time to bring my old Dell out behind the shed and shoot it, and I've decided to build my own gaming rig instead of buying a premade unit. I have tinkered with my PCs in the past, upgrading the GPU and RAM, etc., but I haven't ever built one from scratch. I'm fairly confident in my ability to put it all together, but I'm less confident in my ability to select the correct parts.

Reading through this forum, I've discovered that A) choosing a mobo and PSU is kind of complicated, and B) people here really seem to know their stuff. Thus, I figured that, instead of posting some halfassed list of components that I found for sale on Newegg to be picked apart, I would just try to give an idea of what I was looking for and ask for help selecting specific components.

I'm looking to build a solid gaming rig, but I'm certainly not chasing the cutting edge at this price. I'm looking for something that will do me well for 2-3 years and be easy to plug new components into without having to build a whole new unit for the immediate future. I'm GPU-agnostic, having had good experiences with both ATi and Nvidia cards. This seems like a good fit, but I'm amenable to paying more for a significant performance boost:

Newegg.com - SAPPHIRE 100314SR Radeon HD 6870 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card with Eyefinity

I've had good luck with Crucial RAM in the past, so I planned on going with them again, but I'm really not qualified to be picking out a mobo, PSU or processor. I would essentially be throwing darts, so I'm hoping someone can help me there. As far as the case is concerned, as long as it's less than 11" wide and 20" tall, I don't care what it looks like. I also don't care about the optical drive, as I haven't used my DVD drive for a really long time, but I suppose I should have one.

The only thing other than the box and components that I need is a new monitor, which has to fit in a space that's 20.5" wide while also having an awesome display for gaming. 1920X1080 with HDMI is what I'm after, and I've come up with these so far:

Samsung BX2231 21.5 LED LCD Monitor - 1080p, 1920x1080, 16:9, 1000:1 Native, 2ms, VGA, DVI, HDMI at TigerDirect.com

Newegg.com - LG E2260V Glossy Black 22" Full HD 1920 x 1080p 5ms LED Backlight LCD Monitor Slim Design 250cd/m2 DC 5,000,000:1

While I'm willing to spend up to about $1500, it would be great for the whole package to come in at significantly less. If people here (who know immeasurably more than I do about this stuff) think that I could put together a PC that is a great gaming rig for less, that would be tremendous.

So, if it isn't too much to ask, I was hoping that some knowledgable individuals could point me to some quality, reasonably priced components within the stated parameters, so I don't do something stupid with my money and regret it later.

Thanks in advance (hopefully)!

Do you have a legally (re)usable OS? (The OS that came with the Dell is not) If not, add $100 for Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit OEM. I assume you will be reusing the Dell peripherals.
