Problems with Gigabyte Motherboard
I recently put together a computer, and I'm having a problem with the video randomly dying. I suspect it's the motherboard.
Here's the info: Processor: AMD Athlon II X4 645 Motherboard: Gigabyte 890FXA-UD5 Memory: Patriot DD3 1333 MHz (2 x 4GB) Video card: GeForce 8600GT The first thing I noticed was that the system would take a long time to come back from standby. When the system began to return from standby, the disk would spin, but it would take maybe a minute for the video to return. Finally the video never came back. I forceably powered-down, then powered up. The disk spun as though the computer was booting, but the video never appeared. I tried replacing the video card with another GeForce card (I think it was a 7000 series) but the video did not come back. Tried moving the video card slot, removing other cards, tried to enter the BIOS, reset the BIOS, etc. Nothing brought the video back. I started to disassemble the computer, but on a whim thought, "Now that I've unplugged everything, let me try plugging it all back together and using the same configuration." The video was back! But a couple days later it disappeared again. Like the first time, it simply never came back from standby, then would not come back even when rebooting. When I say the video was gone, I mean that the monitor was reporting "no signal." These video cards work fine with other motherboards. I don't know if the issue is a defective processor or motherboard, or some kind of compatibility issue. Any help appreciated. |

What are you using for a power supply?

PS is a Corsair 600 watt with the larger size 12 V supply to the motherboard (8 pins I think?)

Do you have a spare to test with? Is that Corsair the CX series?

It's the gaming series, the Corsair GS600. I don't have another power supply right now, although I suppose I could get one from Fry's and return it later if it doesn't help.

The GS and the CX are essentially the same units - they are not BAD but they are not up to the standards we are used to from Corsair.

One way to remember is to think of GS as meaning Garbage Series. Not really, but I thought it was funny.

So let me start this build over. Let's say I use the AMD Athlon II chip I already bought, but I want to choose a motherboard, power supply, and graphic card. Can I get a suggestion about these choices that would be a combination pretty well known to work without issues? For graphics card, I need something that can handle blu-ray, and I play one game (a model airplane simulator that does NOT need a whole lot of power).
See, I was annoyed by the issue I was getting with the lengthy time to return from standby. I don't know if this is related to the total failure of video that happened later. Maybe it's a compatibility issue between the mb and graphics card. |
