This build OK for gaming?

Hi all,

I built the PC I'm currently using 5 yrs ago and I think it's time for a new PC. I've limited knowledge in computers so I need the assistance of people who know more than me.

I'm trying to build a PC made for gaming with budget. I'll be using it for school stuff as well.. but mostly I'll be gaming. I looked up newegg and try to piece together a PC and want to know what you guys think of it.

CPU: Intel i5-2500 CORE i5 2500/3.30GHz/6MB CACHE/LGA1155 ($228)

Motherboard: ASUS M4A89GTD PRO/USB3 AM3 AMD 890GX HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard ($250)

Case: Coolermaster CM690 II 692 advanced side window RC-692-KWN2 ($120)

Memory: Corsair CMX4GX3M2A1600C9 6GB (3x XMS3 2GB) PC-12800 (1600MHz) XMS KIT, DDR3 ($80)

Video Card: MSI N465GTX-M2D1G GeForce GTX 465 1G GDDR5, 2*DVI, Mini HDMI ($210)

PSU: Corsair 750W TX750 Power Supply [CMPSU-750TX] ($160)

Hard Drive: OCZ Vertex 2 (E) 2.5" 60GB SATAII Solid State Drive [OCZSSD2-2VTXE60G] ($150)

Data Drive: WD1002FAEX Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB 7200RPM 64MB SATA 6Gbs ($100)

Optical Drive: Lite-On IHAS324 24x SATA 2M Black DVD Burner Optical Drive IHAS324(BLACK) ($30)

Monitor: SUS VE228H 21.5" Widescreen LED Monitor - Glossy Black, Full HD 1920x1080 ($200)

Total: $1,528
(I live in Australia where hardware prices are a lot more expensive..)

Is the case big enough?
Is the motherboard good enough?
Is the PSU enough or too much?
Any conflict with the hardwares?
What's the bottleneck of this built?

Thanks!!

no, that is an AMD3 board and you have an Intel processor. Change the CPU to a AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition Deneb 3.4GHz

Change the memory to Crucial 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10600) Desktop Memory Model CT2KIT51264BA1339

With the video card I would stick with the manufactures EVGA, Asus, or HIS

The SSD should be an Intel X25 or an Adata

Not sure on the monitor, I am not familiar with the one you listed

s the case big enough? YES, good choice
Is the motherboard good enough? YES but you have wrong CPU listed
Is the PSU enough or too much? You could knock it down to a corsair 650w same series
Any conflict with the hardwares? see above
What's the bottleneck of this built? No, if you change the cpu and memory

I prefer Intel that's why I changed the motherboard rather than CPU. I also get a huge discount on the RAM above that's I'll still using it. But otherwise I bolded the specs according to your recommendations.

How does this look now? =)

You need to wait till April if you want Intel Sandy Bridge. The motherboards currently on the shelves are all defective.

You missed the point with the memory - the motherboard does not support triple channel. You install modules in pairs, not threes.

I do NOT recommend a GTX465 - that was the original crippled power hungry hot running Fermi. The 1 GB version of the GTX460 is actually a better performing card.

Which one is Intel Sandy Bridge and what should I replace it with then?

As for the memory, I'll get an extra 2 gigs so it'll be 8 gigs.

I've also changed the video card.

I'm saying that all motherboards for the i5-2500 are defective.

If you want 8 gigs of ram, I highly recommend you get a 4gb x2 ram kit, not a 2gb x4 kit.

Good video card choice.

If you must build right now, choose an Intel 1156 processor and an Asus mobo for it.

Does this mean I should find a new CPU?

Intel Core i5-661 Clarkdale 3.33GHz 4MB L3 Cache LGA 1156 87W Dual-Core Desktop Processor BX80616I5661

How is this one? Will I be gimping myself by going with Dual-Core? Also is my current mobo compatible? I plan to use this desktop for another 5 yrs. I can drop the SSD and go for better CPU to fit my budget.

Your "current" motherboard is what's defective, not the processor. You either need to wait till April or find a different CPU *and* motherboard. There ARE no motherboards for your "current" CPU that are NOT defective.

If you want to build NOW, look at an i5-760 or i7-870, along with an Asus P55 series board. However, in my opinion, it's WELL worth the wait for the fixed motherboards.

Ah... I see now.

Unfortunately I'm in need of a desktop now... so I'll probably get the i5-760 along with an Asus P55 series mobo. I'm very thankful for your help and warnings.. I could have lost $400 for nothing.

Thanks once again!

That's a good value combo. It may not be the latest, but it'll serve you well for a number of years.

The 760 is a nice processor, you will be happy with its performance. On a side note how do you get 5 years out of a computer? I build high end and in two years I will be going nuts because its not fast enough. Not to mention upgrades along the way like graphics cards.

It depends on what you use your machine for. I don't play the latest games, and so my PC lasts me for an average of 4-5 years.

The question is not whether one wants high end (we all want it), but whether one needs it.
