First Build for college

I am trying to build a computer for gaming but also for college as well I have helped assemble computers before but never worked or ordered one by my self so I am wondering if all these parts are compatible and if they are up to date since this computer needs to last 5 or more years and all I need is the box btw my budget is just short of $800 if you need more info about the parts just ask and sorry everything is bunched together

You must be planning on light gaming as no video card on list. The motherboard has built in video but would not run any intense games.

Best Graphics Cards For The Money: February 2011 : February Updates

I'd recommend you get a motherboard that takes DDR3 ram.

Recommended ram brands are Corsair, Crucial, Kingston, or A-Data.

Replace the Seagate drive with a Western Digital Black.

Thanks for the advice here is a updated list of what I am going to get would appreciate it if somebody could double check me and make sure everything is compatible especially processor and motherboard because I am not very confident with them (and I was also wondering if maybe the processor might be a little to overboard) also if my graphics card can run games like fallout 3 + new vegas and left 4 dead 2

For gaming, yes, any 6-core processor is overkill. For games it's the video card that matters most. I didn't want to jump in and tell you this before because you mention that you also want this rig for school, so now I have to ask: what productivity software are you going to be running? Depending on your answer I'll base my video card recomendation as well. If it's just MS Office and the like, I'd say that video card is fine and that all you need is a quad-core at the most. If you're using anything Adobe such as Photoshop, then the 6-core will help you and you also need to buy an nVidia video card.

You need to buy ram in matched pair sets - I'd recommend a 2gb x2 kit.

For gaming, go stronger on the video card and less on the processor.

I will be using programs like adobe photoshop and adobe flash since right now I am planning on majoring in game development but would a 4 core processor like this be enough for that to where I can focus more money on the graphics card

and this is the ram I decided on

Good choices. For a video card, look at a GTX460 1GB.

Alright I am going to post everything its a couple dollars over budget but it will work although my main questions are can the motherboard handle the graphics card and processor and does everything fit in the case (since I changed cases) and also how future proof is this pc

A Mid-ATX should let it fit.

I see you have selected a micro ATX form factor motherboard. Any reason for this choice? Take a look at this particular Asus board. The board is ATX form factor and has additional slots for upgrades in the future. Also, with the rebate and free shipping, the board comes in cheaper.

Newegg.com - ASUS M4A77TD AM3 AMD 770 ATX AMD Motherboard

Also, you can look at with Corsair ram. The rebate makes the ram $39.99

Newegg.com - CORSAIR XMS3 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model CMX4GX3M2A1600C9

When I was searching the site I didn't see that motherboard but I am also concerned about space I know the case form factor is atx but I was thinking I would have more room to work with a micro atx motherboard although if the graphics card would fit in the case with that motherboard I might use it

Working with a standard ATX board is no problem in any midtower case.

Your question is really directly related to the video card. All your other components will fit with ease regardless. So to answer your question, everything should fit with ease. It appears that the video card may ride up close to the drive bays, but you can always drop the harddrive lower. Let me throw some dimensions at you so you will see my thought process.

The case itself is 20.00" x 7.75" x 16.75"
The video card is 9.8" x 5.03"

As per the case specs, Fits Motherboard Size up to 11" x 12"

With that in mind, the card will fit, albeit not with inches and inches of extra room like a full case, but it will fit.

The main concern with the mobo and the videocard is whether the video card will block the serial ATA ports, which in the case of the mobo Extremerc12 suggested is not a problem. That mobo has a neat design.

That MOBO still has only 1 PCIE2 slot. If you never will want the possibility of using 2 graphics cards, then fine, but then you could probably also shave a few bucks and cut down the PSU a notch, and make the fewer unused cables a little easier to manage/hide.

Newegg.com - SILVERSTONE ST50F-ES 500W ATX12V v2.3 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Power Supply

just looking at the pic though, this silverstone's cables are not nearly as well sleeved, and some appear to be absent sleeving, compared to the Corsair's which are very neatly and fully sleeved (and more of them) I have the Corsair, very nice, and xtra long cabling, but had to tuck several long and unused cables away. Alot of excess capacity for me, as of now. It wasn't any big deal at all in my very big case though, and I am very pleased with it.

If the graphics card will fit in using a micro-ATX board, then it will fit in using an ATX board.

Something to keep in mind, the difference between ATX and micro ATX is not in the width of the board (both are 9.6"), but in the height ATX=12" micro = 9.6"
so that the ATX will set up about 1/2" or so off the bottom of your case, and the micro about 3" off the bottom, and where that extra space does not really help very much, IMO, it's pretty much wasted excess space in an ATX case.

I think I wll stick with the psu I have but my last question is am I better off getting this video card rather than the one I posted above since it's just $10 more Or should I just stick with the previous one

Newegg.com - ASUS ENGTX460 DirectCU TOP/2DI/1GD5 GeForce GTX 460 (Fermi) 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card
And I am going with the atx motherboard rather than the micro

The pricier one is essentially the same card, it just happens to have a few extras whose usefulness in real life scenarios may be debatable.

Newegg.com - Computer Parts, PC Components, Laptop Computers, LED LCD TV, Digital Cameras and more!

Looking at that comparison these are the "advantages" that the pricier one has over the other:

Free StarCraft II Experience Coupon
GeForce CUDA Technology ***
NVIDIA PhysX ready
ASUS Splendid
ASUS Gamer OSD
ASUS Smart Doctor
Take Your Game Beyond HD
Fuse Protection
EMI Shield
GPU Guard

Unless you're interested in Starcraft, there's little that 10 extra dollars get you.

***Notice this item. This is missing from the description of the cheaper card: this is a marketing gimmick and it's misleading, because both cards support CUDA and have the same number of CUDA cores. This gimmick alone leads me even more to think that there's little that the pricier card offers over the cheaper one.

The clock and memory speeds are higher on the more expensive card. It's well worth the $10 in my opinion.

Weird, the speeds are the same in the comparison I looked at. Maybe I chose the wrong card. What with links from newegg not opening in my systems and all, I had to go to the page and conduct a search myself. Since there seems to be no solution to this dpvolvw redirection thing, maybe we should ask people to post the SKUs.

If so, then yeah, 10 bux is well worth it.

sorry for my absence and sorry for asking these questions again but I have been looking around and my entire computer setup has changed almost entirely here is my new build the only problem is the motherboard is out of stock and the ram that is approved by the asus website that I could find came in packs of one and I was having trouble deciding between an asus engtx 560 card or the msi and does everything work
