need advice on new build
I don't have a budget but I don't need anything too special. I am a casual gamer. Here are some parts I have picked so far:
processor: AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition Quad Core Processor 3.2GHZ ram: Corsair XMS2 TWIN2X4096-6400C5 4GB DDR2 hard drive: Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB SATA3 6GB/S 7200RPM I need a motherboard, power supply, and graphics card. Any advice? I am willing to go overboard on the graphics card and spend around $250 but I want to pay for the speed and not features that I wont be using. I especially need advice on the motherboard. Thanks! |

I would recommend you pick a DDR3 motherboard and get DDR3 ram. I don't do AMD recommendations, but it should be an Asus.

The Corsair was not in stock yesterday - just shows how fast things change. That's why I recommended the Antec instead.

Ok I am a little hung up on the graphics card.
Newegg.com - HIS H695FN1G2M Radeon HD 6950 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card with Eyefinity and http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...SID=e3us9ec89w are both similarly priced. One has a much faster memory clock and a slightly faster core clock. Does that mean the Asus is the best? When I compair numbers, this graphics card doesn't look too different to me on paper. Is there something I am not seeing or why is this card so much cheaper? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814131330 |

The Asus is factory overclocked. The 5770 isn't even in the same class as a 6950. The clocks may be similar, but it has half the memory bandwidth and a much weaker GPU.

ok that makes cense. Ok, another question. Here are my two picks. Would you spend $20 for the first graphics card over the bottom one. Its probably a speed boost but maybe the brand isn't as good?
Gigabyte Radeon HD 6950 800MHZ 2GB 5GHZ GDDR5 2XDVI HDMI Display Port PCI-E DIRECTX11 Video Card - DirectCanada or HIS Radeon HD 6870 Turbo 1GB GDDR5 2XDVI 2XMINI DisplayPort HDMI PCI-E Video Card - DirectCanada |

Oh, you are in Canada? Same card I linked on the US site:
Newegg.ca - HIS H695FN1G2M Radeon HD 6950 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card with Eyefinity Newegg.ca - CORSAIR Enthusiast Series CMPSU-650TX 650W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Compatible with Core i7 Power Supply |

The 6950 has many more processing cores and is the better choice. HIS has better customer support as it has an advantage but the driver with the nvidia is better.

Ok I think I will go with the 6950. The Gigabyte brand is the same price as the powercolor brand. Are they both the same or is one generally preferred?
Now all I need to choose are the power supply and drives. thanks for the help so far! |

Check with ncix.com for the same hardware. Ncix is Canadian and ships faster, and they'll match newegg's price in case it's cheaper.

directcanada is honestly the cheapest place I have seen in Canada, sometimes even cheaper than newegg. I also like them since they are based in my province so they ship fast to me. I built my last rig from this site and I was happy with it. I would recommend.

DirectCanada is from the same chain as Ncix and NXSource (they're all Netlink Computers). DirectCanda handles the outlet and surplus I think.
Check their addys: Ncix: http://www.ncix.com/contact/ DC: http://www.directcanada.com/contact/ |

Nobody else in Canada has a 6950 as cheap as the HIS at Newegg. I looked!

ok ok, ill give you that. some things are cheaper though, including the card I am starting to settle on.
Newegg.ca - GIGABYTE GV-R695D5-2GD-B Radeon HD 6950 2GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card with Eyefinity Gigabyte Radeon HD 6950 800MHZ 2GB 5GHZ GDDR5 2XDVI HDMI Display Port PCI-E DIRECTX11 Video Card - DirectCanada the processor I have picked out is also cheaper on directcanada. But I do know that in the past I have always been envious of your newegg. I do know they have an amazing track record for prices. |

Newegg is a good online store and has great selection, sometimes being the only ones carrying a certain product. Their service is excellent. I only recommend ncix over them for two reasons: 1) newegg dispatches from the US, so parcels take longer (about a week) to arrive; and 2) whenever I'm presented with the choice of buying from a Canadian company or a US company I'll always choose the Canadian one (I'm a patriot), even if that represents paying a mite more. That's all, it's not that I hate newegg or anything.

new question. Should I be interested in getting a modular power supply since I am only using one hard drive, graphics card, dvd drive? Would it eliminate alot of wires?

Good cable management can take care of it, but yes, a modular would make things easier. Your choice really. I'll let G suggest a good modular unit, as I've never liked modulars.

Corsair HX series modulars. I don't have one yet, but I'm going for a Corsair 650 HX this year at glc's advice.
I'm debating on getting an AX750 for the reliability of Corsair's Pro series, but either will come with a 7 year warranty.

I do like the Corsair HX series modulars - but if you are trying to keep the cost down, the Antec BP550 Plus is a decent unit.

Buy dual channel ram kits, not single modules. Anything faster than 1333 is a waste unless you will be heavily overclocking.

You also need an OS.
Wait on the case? Where are you going to put the computer? |

good point. add $100 for windows 7 home premium.
I am thinking about finding an oldschool case, painting it, gutting it of all plastic, and maybe getting a piece of acrylic made for the side panel. |
