Comparing two builds
Considering these two rigs - first is a less expensive almost part for part from a recent thread on here, second is a bit more expensive one I put together based on recommendations on a few threads I saw. Only a $200 difference between the two. Don't really have a budget but also don't need something crazy so I'd be happy with either price. Will the extra $200 actually be worth it?
This is a bit of an impulse buy - have been out of the gaming scene for a while and want to piece this together next week. Thanks! Other than gaming, what will you be using your computer for?
For gaming, it comes down to a 460 versus a 6850. Since both cards average out about the same in the benchmarks, I would take the less expensive computer. I would then sink another $200 into the graphics card and make it a $687 build with a 6970 or a 570, both of which are roughly equivalent in the benchmarks. http://www.tomshardware.com/charts/2...amer,2659.html I would not use the 750 watt OCZ PSU on the second rig. Substitute it for the more reliable and much less expensive 650 watt Corsair PSU on the first rig. None of the above cards need a 750 watt PSU.

Just gaming - thanks, was about to head out and purchase everything.
With the extra money in mind what card would you put in? |

So far here's where I'm at (fry's opens in 90 minutes, so I've got a few minutes left to decide)
ASUS M4A87TD/USB3 AM3 AMD 870 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 AMD Motherboard - $99 Newegg.com - ASUS M4A87TD/USB3 AM3 AMD 870 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 AMD Motherboard Newegg.com - ASUS M4A87TD EVO AM3 AMD 870 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard Antec Three Hundred Illusion Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case - $59 Newegg.com - Antec Three Hundred Illusion Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case AMD Athlon II X4 640 Propus 3.0GHz Socket AM3 95W Quad-Core Desktop Processor ADX640WFGMBOX - $99 Newegg.com - AMD Athlon II X4 640 Propus 3.0GHz 4 x 512KB L2 Cache Socket AM3 95W Quad-Core Desktop Processor ADX640WFGMBOX Corsair Gaming Series GS600 High Performance PSU ATX Power Supply CMPSU-600G -$89 http://www.frys.com/product/6251250?...H:MAIN_RSLT_PG A-DATA 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model AX3U1600GB2G9-AG $49.99 Just need to pick a GPU, and since I'm saving some $$ compared to the more expensive build I can spend a bit more on it. |

Amongst the four different graphics cards discussed I would pick the 570 or the 6970. Both are about the same. For a single monitor it would be the 570. If I was considering more monitors in the future it would be the 6970. The 6970 benchmarks only slightly higher.
For the same price you can have a better PSU with a 5 year warranty versus a 3 year warranty. That's a good one as well and on the list of reputable PSU brands.
What Power Supply should I get? How many Watts? Who made it? Guide Inside. |

Thanks Dave, I really appreciate it. I've been an Apple guy for the last five years (worked there) and this will be the first PC I've build since 2004 =P

You're welcome. Don't tell your Apple buddies you went over to the Dark Side.
