Doohickeys , wherezitgo?
I have a new build in a Lian Li Case (which I find to be the best engineered case I have ever seen) that has a combo USB/smart card reader on the side near the front bezel. I can't figure out the mobo connector for the smart card reader: It's a flat 5 pin connector with one end pin blanked. It looks like it would go on one half of a USB2 connector. Is that what I do? I just don't want to melt something, I hate that smell.
Thanks.

Sure wouldn't hurt to at least mention the mobo model number... Posting a link to the manual to the mobo would be even better

Yes, it goes on a USB header, the red wire is pin 1. The 5th pin at the other end is not used, it's just an extra ground.

Thanks for that. I figured it was the USB by process of elimination but I couldn't find it in the manual for the board or the case. I just didn't want to fry something!

would leave the card reader unplugged until you get the os loaded and drivers loaded.
Windows would assign drive letters to the reader first, so the OS HD could end up with a drive letter in the middle instead of c:

Well, I finally got the time to take all the screws off the side of the case and wire this card reader up. The results: I make all changes with system and power off. I have 3 USB connector terminals on this board, pairs 7/8, 9/10, and 11/12. I had the front panel USB in 7/8 so I tried it on the keyed 4 pin side of 9/10. Windows did not see the card when inserted with this connection. I connected front panel USB to 9/10 and connected the card reader to the keyed side of 7/8. The little green LED above the reader slot came on when mobo power was switched on. Once in windows, however, the card reader did not respond to insertion of an SD card. The green light above the slot of the card reader stayed on as long as power supply was on.
