Building a new desktop for gaming/entertainment

Hello!

My notebook has recently given out on me (pretty sure the motherboard is ruined as the notebook display crashes when streaming video or playing games) so I am looking at getting a desktop again. I've been wanting to build my own computer for some time now so I figured I would give it a shot.

I won't be putting this desktop together until May at least so these parts are just a basis to start with.

Case:
Buy the Cooler Master CM690 II Advanced Computer Case at TigerDirect.ca

Motherboard:
Buy the ASUS Rampage III Gene Motherboard at TigerDirect.ca

CPU:
Buy the Intel Core i7 950 Processor BX80601950 at TigerDirect.ca

Graphics Card:
Buy the EVGA GeForce GTX 560 Ti FPB 1GB GDDR5 PCIe at TigerDirect.ca

Power Supply:
Buy the Ultra X4 750-Watt Modular Power Supply at TigerDirect.ca

Memory:
Buy the Corsair CMX8GX3M2A1333C9 XMS 8GB DDR3 RAM at TigerDirect.ca

HDD:
Buy the Seagate Barracuda LP HD at TigerDirect.ca

Drive:
Buy the LG WH10LS30 Blu Ray Rewriter (OEM) at TigerDirect.ca

Adapter:
Buy the D-Link DWA-556 PCIe Wireless Network Adapter at TigerDirect.ca

I am looking to spend between $1000-1500 and this comes to about $1400, but if I can cut the cost without losing performance too much that would be great. I've never tried to put together my own desktop so I tried my best to make sure the parts were compatible. Any suggestions on different parts?

Thanks!

Some of it would be cheaper from Newegg.com

Case:

TigerDirect: 114.99
Newegg: 89.99

CPU:

TigerDirect: 299.97
Newegg: 279.99

GPU:

TigerDirect: 259.99
Newegg: 249.99

Adapter:

TigerDirect: 74.99
Newegg: 44.99

I included the link to the newegg item. Hopefully, that'll save you a little money.

I should have mentioned that I live in Canada so I figured buying from Tigerdirect would save me the hassle of higher shipping fees and customs charges.

I would recommend replacing your Ultra psu with a Corsair or Antec.

There is always Newegg Canada, http://www.newegg.ca/

Design your rig when you are ready to buy because prices and technology change so fast.

Newegg has a Canadian site: Newegg.ca - Computer Parts, PC Components, Laptop Computers, Digital Cameras and more!
Would change the Seagate for a WD Black HD.
Would also stay away from the 1366 socket/X58 chipset. That combo has it's quirks and are for the advanced builder that know how to tweak it for stability. If you are willing to wait, the Sandy Bridge boards will be reissued in April.

Yeah I've been reading other topics and I noticed that mother board mentioned a lot.

Wow, I didn't even know there was a Canadian Newegg site.

NCIX.com - Canada's Premier Computer Store - Great Technology, Service and Selection.

They're better than newegg, and they're Canadian. And they'll match the competition's price.

Building my own gaming PC

Hello!

I made a topic here a little over a month ago and its gone now so I figured I would make a new one. I am looking to order the parts to build my own PC this week and I need some help.

I have a budget of about $1500 CAD, but if I can get what I want for less than that's great too. I want the PC to be able to play Starcraft 2 on max settings without fps drops.

Last time I posted a build someone mentioned waiting for the Sandy Bridge motherboards to come out in April. Have they come out now?

Thanks.

The corrected Sandy Bridge boards, B3's, are here but some Asus boards are in short supply.

Are you purchasing from Newegg.ca?

Do you think you might ever want two graphics cards?

I was going to order from newegg more than likely. I wasn't planning on getting two graphics cards if I can run Starcraft 2 on max with just one. Is there much of a price increase on the motherboard for having the option open though?

Not much...it depends on which motherboard. If you look up the specs you can see which ones can handle two cards and the number of graphics lanes available to the second card. With your budget I would be inclined to get one that is capable of a second card so you have that option available in the future. A single kick-ass card will cover you for any sized single monitor.

Okay I'll keep that in mind. I'll put together a build and post it for any feedback. I've never done this before so I want to make sure I don't make mistakes of picking incompatible hardware or inferior quality hardware.

The only things I see right now is to change out your hard drive to a WD Black 6 GB/sec, 64 megs cache.

Also, get a dual channel kit for your RAM. With dual channel you buy the DIMM sticks in pairs.

I don't know why but your links are bringing up the home page and not the item....no problem though.

Threads merged, the old one didn't go anywhere.

If you want to save a few bucks, the P8P67 Pro has the same dual card capability. With what you save, you can get a 4gb x2 ram kit - and you don't need Dominator, the standard XMS3 is fine and actually preferable.

Thanks for merging the topics. I couldn't find the old one in the list so I made a new one.

Alright, I've switched the memory out for http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...82E16820145315 and the motherboard for http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...82E16813131703. I want a blu ray player for it, but I'm having trouble finding one on newegg that has good reviews while not costing well over $100.

I'm looking at the WD harddrives and it seems that a lot of people are having problems with them along with them being loud. Is this really that big of an issue or is it just a rare case?

Okay so all I have left now is to find a case and a wireless adapter.

What brand name/features should I look for in a wireless adapter?

I would like to have a mid tower so would this tower be big enough to fit everything? Newegg.ca - COOLER MASTER Storm Scout SGC-2000-KKN1-GP Black Steel / Plastic ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

Also, I noticed reading other topics that some people have two internal drives. One for files and one smaller one for the OS install. Is this worth investing in?

If you can fit everything on one drive that keeps things simpler and easier. For a backup drive you would want an external drive.

Midtower cases can usually fit everything except in some cases where you are into water cooling, have a very large PSU or have a very large graphics card.

For the wireless, having both parts of the same brand makes it more likely to be easier to set up. Others might have a preference for Netgear, Linksys or D-Link. I would get one that is at least g and n capable.

Thanks for the help everyone. I have just have a few last questions.

Should I keep the stock fan that comes with the i7-2600k or should I buy one seperate?

Do I need to buy thermal paste or will it come with my CPU (i7-2600k)? If not what brand should I get?

Also, I've read different instructions from different places on how to apply the thermal paste. Some people say to just put a small amount and let the pressure of the heat sink spread it out, and others say to spread it out yourself. Which way is better (or should I say easier)?

I've just received my i7 2600k. And there is actually some thermal paste pre-applied on the fan that comes with the cpu. So you won't have to worry about that

Do you plan of overclocking the cpu? If no, stock is fine. If yes:

COOLER MASTER Hyper 212 Plus nice and cheap cooler that should be able to get to 4.5ghz without much problem.

or

Noctua NH-D14 120mm & 140mm SSO CPU Cooler biggest, badest, "I'm shooting for 5.0ghz" heatsink.

If you're using the stock cooler, the paste is on the cooler already. If you get a different one, you might need to buy it(some coolers do come with thermal paste preapplied on the cooler or a tube of their finest). Arctic Silver 5 is a popular brand if you need to buy some.

I believe the 2600k is a thin vertical line down the middle and let the pressure from the heatsick spread it. I'll have to get back to you on that one. I've done the pea size in the center with both my 2600Ks and the temps aren't that bad. Ambient temps are 19C, idle temps are 36C and load temps are 65-70C.

Edit: Yep, vertical line for the 2600k if you're getting AS5 http://www.arcticsilver.com/intel_ap...n_method.html#

So I have my PC up and running now and I'm interested in trying out the overclocking features on my motherboard and the CPU and I need to replace the stock heat sink. Would the Hyper 212+ be a good investment? I'd like to get a heat sink that will take care of all my overclocking desires for the foreseeable future.

Also, would it be worth it to get a 50 mm fan for the Sabertooth and/or fill the remaining fan spaces in my case with a 200 mm and a 120 mm fan?

I'm looking at getting myself a new keyboard and mouse too. The ones I have came with a Dell PC I bought 6 years ago so I'd like something new. I love mechanical keyboards so I'm leaning right now towards a Steelseries keyboard and mouse. Anyone have any experience with this brand's hardware?

MOBO: Asus P67 Sabertooth
CPU: i7-2600k
Case: HAF 922

How much are you willing to spend on a cooler? The 212+ is a good cooler, but is outclassed by the likes of the noctua nh-d14, and my current favorite the corsair H70.
Your case fans should be fine as they are, if you are not liking your temps after the OC then you might look at replacing some case fans.

I was looking to spend a maximum of $100 on the cooler. I would rather stay away from water cooling though.

What would be the temperature difference be between the Hyper 212+ and the NH-D14?
