Clean Slate PCbuild
This is the first time I have had the drive and cash to do this kind of project. I have taken apart prebuilts and installed new parts but never a whole rig. I have a friend who programs and builds for a living so that part will be no problem hopefully lol. Really came here to ask if my build was up to snuff or if there were some things that I could change to make it better.

I'd recommend a Western Digital Black instead of that Hitachi. You don't need that SATA cable, motherboards come with at least 2. You are missing an optical drive, get whatever DVD burner is on free shipping this week.

No card or dual cards will be able to Max out Crysis 2, it is going to be the new benchmark game, dual 6970s in xfire couldn't push the original Crysis at max.

Should I worry about temps with a smaller case and that Phenom IIx6? Maybe a liquid cooling system or just go with a fast quad core from AMD?
Secondly my goof on that optical drive and your saying I couldnt run the original crysis on max settings with this machine? |

As long as your CPU is relatively new, it will be your graphics card that is the speed limit for Crysis 2. Think 580 or 6970.
Hopefully the Crysis 2 Crytec engine will be the more efficient engine they used for Crysis Warhead. If not they are limiting their market to people who have $1500 plus gaming rigs or don't mind playing at Mario Brothers resolutions. ![]() It will be interesting to see if Crysis 2 can fully utilize a quad core. Does anyone know?

Is the 6970 2gb that much better than the 6950 2gb...I want a future proof system and I know that isnt asking much time with a pc build..but atleast the only thing I would have to replace in the next couple years would be my gpu

On a percentage basis there is not much difference. It looks like about 12% in 3DMark11-Gamer and a 9% difference in Alien vs Predator. But then that's how it is with higher end graphics cards, with price the performance increases but at a decreasing rate where the curve starts getting closer to flat, compared to the less expensive cards which have a steeper (better) performance/price curve.

Unless you pvp, 1 6950 with any Current Dual Core higher than 2.5Ghz with 1MB L2 Cache or better will do the job and do it well.
If you pvp then sky is the limit. PVP = Player vs. Player gaming! |

Yes I did but not to that model WD..the reviews I had read on newegg gave me doubts about it. I am really excited about this..hopefully I get my new reward card tomorrow..I want the cash back..but if not I will just buy all parts outright!
The only real thing I am worried about putting this bad boy together is the CPU/Mobo and getting all the wires cleaned up to make this look good on the inside and out. Also Thanks to everyone for your help..other forums I have ventured to before I got serious about actually building were far less helpful..and far less kind about it lol |

Take online reviews with a grain of salt. The pros here know better than many of those.

So far so good on my build!
Have gotten the Mobo mounted with cpu/heatsink installed along with the RAM and GPU. Installed the power supply and am now working on getting my drives installed then it will be making all the connections hiding the wires. Have had fun putting this build together. It has been frustrating and rewarding. I will post pics once all is done and showing the entire process! Once again thanks to all the help on this forum! |

Before you go TOO far, I'd recommend you validate the core components:

Finished my build yesterday morning and booted up the first time with no problems!...Hit a snag with Windows 7 install but that was and easy fix =) Everything is running great. Rift looks amazing. Crysis 2 is simply amazing and I am installing Starcraft 2 to see what I was missing on my old computer! Very fun experience cannot wait to do it again three years from now hopefully lol.
My final question for the gurus of the forum is what would be ideal core temps for my computer. When it is idling they stay at about 23 or 25*c. Running Crysis 2 which is what I have mainly been playing since finishing this build I get around 36*c to 38*c with my high point being 42*c. I am using Core Temp to gather this information..which is telling me my TJMax is 99*c. I read that 20*c less than that would be the max so I feel like my temps are not too hot..will consider replacing thermal compound if that would help. |
