If what you've got is the 64mb card then yes it's an improvement.
But by no stretch is either card current, also you're badly in need of more ram and the SP3 update.

What games are you interested in?
Some really good older ones will run on your set up but current ones won't.

There were quite a few different versions of the ATI 9600, the basic 9600 wasn't really a gamers card. If it's the XT it'll be a half decent gamer for older games, but the XT didn't help it a whole lot more. If I rember right it was the 9800 that was the sweetspot for gaming at the time.

The Radeon 9600 also came in an All-in-Wonder flavor which if it is, it will add some fun toys to your pc. The AIW 9600XT was the fastest of its series. But its actually the AIW that made it faster. ATI automatically overclocked it to be able to handle the extra video functions.

BTW I'm not sure, but I thnk you're going to need at least 450watt psu for that 9600.

If he were getting a 9700 or 9800 he'd have to check the power supply but the 9600, which replaced the pricier 9500 Pro, is fine with a 300 watt psu .

Which brings up the question of does that HP have a 300 watt psu.
You're right that he needs to check.

If you don't run into any game problems your power supply is good enough.

There are aftermarket PSU manufacturers that make replacements for proprietary PSU's like what your HP came with. A more powerful PSU means you could have a faster card. Right now that's your graphics speed limit, the power output of your PSU.

You need to balance this against throwing good money into an old computer which can never be made to run as fast as a new computer. With the newer games it's a real challenge to keep up with the technology always changing so fast.

Bad color quality is a card or driver or monitor issue, not a power supply or motherboard issue.

It's not worth upgrading an AGP video card any more.

If it's not the monitor and it's not the drivers then it's the card.

You can try going into the CCC and adjusting color (You can also make sure the card/monitor connection is tight) but if that doesn't do it the card goes back to your friend.

I get that you'd really like to keep that card but the fact is that it's damaged and failing.

Return it to your friend and continue saving for your new computer.
