Comments/Suggestions On First Time Build

Hey everyone.

Below you will find spec on my build. I have never built a pc before, so any compatibility comments would be great. Also, I have windows 7 as the operating system but am leary about using it and am considering XP, what is the experience of the community with that? I didn't plan on bothering with a sound card, figured i'd go with the integrated, or else I've got a relatively new one (cheapy though) layin around here somewhere, does it make much of a difference?

Also, I have not gone through all the power connections in depth so I am really not sure about the power supply:P

Sorry in advance if this pastes bad, I took it from excel and will re-post if that is the case.

Welcome to the Forum. Mind telling us what your purposes are for this computer please? For the Graphics card, id stick to well known names like, ASUS, EVGA, Saphire, HIS, etc. Also heres the same version of Windows 7, just cheaper.
Newegg.com - Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit 1-Pack for System Builders - Operating Systems

And for the PSU, the antec should be good to my knowledge, however it seems most like to stick to corsair atm, they are doing really well lately.

I would be doing some mild gaming, I'm not hardcore into it or anything. Some world of warcraft, and magicka, stuff like that. I do have video editing software that I would like to instal again with a better computer. I have had my current gateway for 8-10 years now with relatively few upgrades and have loved it, but so many things are becoming obselete that I can't even upgrade, so I'd like to future proof to make sure I don't need a whole new system for another 8 years or so hopefully!

Yeah I have read around and saw other suggestions for the power supply, so was already considering changing that up.

As far as the graphics card, is there something you could suggest that would be very similar within those brands to the radeon HD5850?

I was under the impression that with the "full" version of Windows 7 I could install it on other computers as well, where as the OEM I could not? I'd like to re-do my daughters computer too with windows 7 because it is completely whack with vista right now:P

Thank you for the suggestions.

Np, umm with the windows OEM feature to my knowledge it should be no different, however id wait to hear from an elder member on here. Considering your not going to be doing a lot of multitasking, and major editing, id reccomend this CPU bieng its faster in almost every aspect.
Newegg.com - Intel Core i5-2500K Sandy Bridge 3.3GHz (3.7GHz Turbo Boost) 4 x 256KB L2 Cache 6MB L3 Cache LGA 1155 95W Quad-Core Desktop Processor BX80623I52500K
Which also means you have to swap Motherboards. Which you would need to anyways, considering MSI is basically a brand to avoid, for Mobos try to stick to ASUS if possible.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131706 <--mobo

Also, i forgot to mention your RAM, its brand has not been found too reliable in comparison to other brands such as, ADATA, Kingston, or Corsair.

GPU this ones, HIS, faster, and cheaper.
Newegg.com - HIS H687F1G2M Radeon HD 6870 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card with Eyefinity

Cool so I changed up most the stuff per your post.

I modified the motherboard to the following though in case I would ever want to add a second video card, so how about this for mobo:

Newegg.com - GIGABYTE GA-P67A-UD3P-B3 LGA 1155 Intel P67 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

Not the suggested but seemed to have solid reviews and the option for a second card on the 1155 style.

Also, is there that much difference between 4gb ddr3 ram @ 1600 vs 1333 vs 1066 etc?

Also, it looks like when I filtered down to the LGA 1155 teh PCI E 2.1 option dissapeared but my vid card is now 2.1. Does the LGA 1155 style chip not support 2.1? And as I may have mentioned before I can still use the 2.1 vid card in a 2.1 slot right?

Also read that 3 ram will not work as effectively as it should with the dual processing so I added a 4th.

Unless your doing some OCing or gaming hardcore, id just stick to 1333 RAM to save money(they basically mean different speeds, and for your uses you should be fine with 1333), and yeah go with dual channel RAM, as in 2 sticks of 2GB RAM to = 4GB, most mobos these days run dual channel.
Like these.
Newegg.com - A-DATA 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model AD3U1333B2G9-DRH

With the Mobo, gigabytes board is basically the same to my knowledge, and the Pro ASUS board should be able to run SLI/Crossfire anyways. Again id heavily reccomend sticking to ASUS, as will almost all members here to my knowledge. I still however am a noob, so i may be wrong. When it comes to the 2.1 and 2.0 compatibility i really am not sure. Probably gunna have to get a senior member on that topic.

I'm not going to address the case or any of the peripherals except the monitor, because those are essentially personal choices. This would be my choice for that kind of work:

Newegg.com - ASUS P8P67 PRO (REV 3.0) LGA 1155 Intel P67 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

Newegg.com - Intel Core i5-2500 Sandy Bridge 3.3GHz (3.7GHz Turbo Boost) 4 x 256KB L2 Cache 6MB L3 Cache LGA 1155 95W Quad-Core Desktop Processor BX80623I52500

Newegg.com - CORSAIR XMS3 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 Desktop Memory Model CMX8GX3M2A1333C9

Newegg.com - Western Digital Caviar Black WD5002AALX 500GB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive

Newegg.com - LG Black 22X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 12X DVD-RAM 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-R 32X CD-RW 48X CD-ROM 2MB Cache SATA DVD±RW SuperMulti Drive - CD / DVD Burners

Newegg.com - HIS H685F1GD Radeon HD 6850 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card with Eyefinity

Newegg.com - CORSAIR Enthusiast Series TX650 V2 650W ATX12V v2.31/ EPS12V v2.92 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Active PFC High Performance Power Supply

Newegg.com - ASUS VE198T Black 19" 5ms LED BackLight LCD Monitor w/Speakers 250 cd/m2 ASCR 10,000,000:1

The PSU is certified for two 6850's. You won't need the adapter cable, the monitor is DVI and comes with a cable. Concur with OEM Win 7 HP 64. You CANNOT use ANY operating system legally on more than one computer at a time, if you want to upgrade your daughter's, you need to buy one for that too.

Thanks for the advice.

Yeah I ended up reading about the licensing after for windows. That isn't really a big deal anyway, it was more a side thing, so I'm not too worried about that, plus she will have this comp available now, which works fine for anything she would want to do. Sounds like the only real advantage is if for some reason the computer with seven ever went to crap on me or I got rid of just the hardware then I could re-install it on my next comp which isn't really much of an advantage, because hopefully that will be 2 operating systems later and it will prolly be time to upgrade by then.
