How much would this alienware laptop cost me if I made a Desktop Version?
I have always thought that that laptops cost twice as much for a desktop with the exact same specs and I was wondering if that is still true.
Can someone please give me a ball park estimate of what it would cost to make the "highest end" Alienware if i was making a pc from scratch. I know i could look up all the parts, but I wanted the communities thoughts regarding this.. before I consider throwing down over 2k on a laptop. Laptop Cost $2,219.00 PROCESSOR - Sandy Bridge Intel® Core™ i7 2820QM 2.3GHz (3.4GHz Turbo Mode, 8MB Cache) MEMORY 8GB Dual Channel DDR3 at 1333MHz (4DIMMS) VIDEO CARD 2GB GDDR5 AMD Radeon™ HD 6970M HARD DRIVE 320GB 7,200RPM HDD Lol - dell lets you customize your gaming system... 90% has nothing to do with the laptop performance. Probably around $1200-$1500, not including peripherals (monitor, keyboard, mouse, speakers, etc).
Mobile devices are typically more expensive. And you're also paying for the Alienware name.

Agreed with the above, name, and warranty(kinda), and mobile is kind of a different field. Different RAM, CPUs, and GPUs, so its kinda harsh to compare. And just seeing the specs above are ridiculous for the price, and you have a guarantee to have at most 2 hour battery life.

Thanks for the feedback, it really put things in perspective.
I am in a situation where my year old duo core2 runs great for day to day operations but I cant play games on a decent setting. The thing is... I can still play the games (left 4 dead 2, Bioshock 1, Dead space 1, minecraft) and I also have a PS3 so I should have my gaming covered, but of course I want more power. So im going to lean towards a desktop. It bugs me when you see these 3k gaming rigs... how much do you really need to spend to enjoy high end graphics on a fast system. |

You can build a tower to smoke that alienware for prbly around like said above, 1200ish. And after that it would be easy to go faster, and its pretty easy. I just spent around 2000$ on my rig, and thats running the best single GPU processor out, and some of the betterish hardware. And for me thats more than enough, and will prbly be futureproof for i would hope atleast 4 years.

Why don't you just upgrade the existing desktop as necessary? Please list all your specs - brand and model of each component.
