I need to build a computer for Solidworks 2011 sp3. I do a lot of assemblies and I run FEA quite a bit. My budget is currently $2000 but may be stretched a bit if needed. I'm open to all options, but so far I am thinking:
Core i7 960 3.2ghz 4*2gb DDR 3 1600 Quadro 600 1gb video 2*500gb SATA drives 650w or larger supply(do I need to go 850?) I've got mouse/keyboard/monitor/speakers that I will be using. Well maybe a new monitor depending on budget. Looking forward to everyones thoughts. |

The Quadro 600 only draws about 45w so you probably could get by with a 550w PSU.
If you are thinking of doing RAID with the HDs, would rather suggest getting a 500g WD Black for OS and programs and a WD Green for data. Asus for a motherboard brand/Corsair/Crucial/A-data for ram and you will need a DVD burner.

Get 2x4gb of ram, instead of 4x2. Less parts to fail, keeps it simpler.

Why a full-sized case? I mistakely bought a full tower on my first build. I knew it was big, but dismissed it as I was looking at other towers..now I have this HUGE case taking up a lot of room..lol
If you're not OC'ing, then DDR 1333 Ram should do just fine. I know you have a big budget, but why spend it on things you dont need? This should be just fine: Newegg.com - CORSAIR XMS3 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 Desktop Memory Model CMX8GX3M2A1333C9 I know nothing about professional type graphics cards, but with your budget, there seems to be better one (based upon cost...generally, the better/faster are more expensive...I think) |

I've bounced back and fourth between case sizes. I know I may want to liquid cool this at some point if not right off the bat and I figured I would need the added space of the full size tower. Can I still liquid cool in a mid case?
I've highly considered the fire pro 5800 and Quadro 2000 video cards. Can someone give opinions on these? Price is significantly higher but still in budget. And to add to the list Sea sonic 750 Newegg.com - SeaSonic X750 Gold 750W ATX12V V2.3/EPS 12V V2.91 SLI Ready 80 PLUS GOLD Certified Modular Active PFC Power Supply Wireless Newegg.com - D-Link DWA-552 IEEE 802.11g, IEEE802.11n Draft 2.0 32-bit PCI Xtreme Desktop Adapter Up to 300Mbps Wireless Data Rates Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA, WPA2) Wired Newegg.com - LINKSYS EG1032 10/ 100/ 1000Mbps PCI Network Adapter 1 x RJ45 |

What motherboard are you looking to use? You shouldn't need any wired lan card for any I can think of.

Yep, that one already has dual lan ports on it, getting a separat LAN card will be a waste, you can roll that $$ into a better card (or send it to me..either way works...)
Or you can just save it...=p |

Thanks for the info on the lan card. Saving the money sounds good.
I'm comparing the mother boards that P8P67 does sound like a good one. I don't have amy experience with it but looks like it is time to learn. Can't be that different. What its best for cooling? So what am I forgetting or overlooking? |

If you don't overclock, then the cooling by the stock fan is sufficient for the CPU.

My experience overclocking a computer is very limited. I hear that it is much more stable now. Do you recommend it? Any reliability problems?

If you do decide to overclock, get the i7-2600K processor. The "K" series has unlocked multipliers.
I would also get the Vengeance ram, not the Dominator. 1600 speed for overclocking. |

Is this the ram you are suggesting?
Newegg.com - Desktop Memory, 8GB (2 x 4GB), DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800),vengeance What makes it better than the Dominator? |

Yes. Because it will run at 1.5 volts, the Dominator won't.

Other than the Seasonic being overkill, looks fine.
