PCI express 2.0 vs 2.1

Hi all.

I'm doing the final bits of finding the parts for my build and I'm noticing a lot of decent video cards are PCI expresss 2.1x16. Should I just go ahead and get a motherboard with PCIe 2.1 compatibility or should I not really worry about it? I'm just worried that I'll buy all this stuff and it'll be way outdated soon.

Thanks!

It's backwards compatible. No need to worry.

So 2.0 will work on 2.1, but does it work in reverse (does a 2.1 card work on a 2.0 slot?)?

Yes, it will work. That is what backwards compatible means. The old technology will work with the new. The bandwidth is the same. It has to do with the upcoming 3.0 format which will not affect what you are considering.
