need help upgrading my rig for photo editing!
Hi guys,
ok so about 10 yrs ago I build my first system with the help of several people here... since then I have moved to PA and really didnt need the pc for anything other than internet usage and editting photos. Anyway... I recently updated to Photoshop CS5 and with my PC only having 1 1/2 gygs of ram, running Windows XP, and being as old as it is...well your tell me? time to upgrade? i think so.... ok... I need advise.... 1. I am recycling the case I see no need to buy a new one. 2. video card. 3. Mobo. 4. Processor 5. Video Card. 6. HDD's (I have 2 internal that are not SATA, and one external usb) 7. I already have Windows 7 8. Anything other help, would be much appreciated...since i have not followed tech for the past couple of years. Criteria... 1. Budget... needs to be $400-500 (if lower...optimal) 2. I do not need monitor, mouse, etc. am I forgetting anything???? Thanks guys -Frank |

Thanks GLC!!! The mobo...when it says it's a "macro" what does that mean? Smaller in size? The case I am recycling is a full tower!

Also...in the future if I wanted to add more Ram...can I? I assume so since the mobs details says it can handle 16 gigs max, but I'm not sure? That would mean that I walled have to get to sticks of 4 gigs do they even make those? Sorry for all the questions.. I do appreciate the help

Well, I used that motherboard strictly from a cost standpoint. If you can toss another 70 bucks or so at it, this would be a much better choice:
Newegg.com - ASUS P8P67 LE (REV 3.0) LGA 1155 Intel P67 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard Micro boards do fit in a standard case, but until you get into this price range, all you get are 2 memory slots. The one I just linked has 4 slots and is a full size board. They do make 4 gig sticks - again, if you want to spend more you could put a 4gb x2 kit in now. |

The ram SHOULD be installed in matched pairs, and if you fill it up with 4 modules, it works better if both pairs are identical. How much ram do you want to start off with?

Well the more Ram the better, but since $$$ is an issue, I will start with 4 gigs (the pair you recommended) and as soon i get some extra cash i will buy an extra pair, since the 2nd mobo you recommended has 4 slots!

althought some of the items on the list are discounted im trying to see if i can get some more rebates for the rest of the items (CPU, HDD) I know the video card comes with a $20.00 mail in rebate which made my day....trying to make every penny count, you know!

Why don't you start with 8 gigs - a 4gb x2 kit is only about 40 bucks more than a 2x2.

The Crucial is as good a choice as any, especially at that price.

Hey GLC the PC is running like a dream. I was wondering...if i wanted to upgrade from 8 gigs of ram to 16gigs... does the extra ram has to be the same as the above? Newegg.com - Crucial 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10600) Desktop Memory Model CT2KIT51264BA1339
or can I get a different brand and used with the Crucial? |

Your video card just barely meets minimums, but if you want to upgrade to the RECOMMENDED requirements, you will need a new video card, power supply, and CPU. Your CPU meets minimums.
Try it first before you buy anything. |

To be honest....at this point it would be nice to play the game, but im really more interested in using two monitors, and I supposed a video card upgrade would be more important than CPU or PSU at this time. I have a budget of $150. any suggestion for the 2nd mobo you recommended?

Hi GLC,
I think i know the answer to this, and at the risk of sounding dumb... the mobo you suggested on this build (which is the one i got) its a LGA 1155 socket, so technically it supports the new Ivy Bridge CPUs, right... Newegg.com - Intel Core i5-3450 Ivy Bridge 3.1GHz (3.5GHz Turbo) LGA 1155 77W Quad-Core Desktop Processor Intel HD Graphics 2500 BX806237I53450 like this one? Frank |

If you go to support.asus.com and look up your motherboard, there is a CPU support list.
