Best Bang for $500 bucks - CPU & GPU? (May 2011)

If I have $500 to spend on both a CPU & a GPU combined, what will give me the best bang for my buck.

Been three years since my last build, and seven since the build I am replacing.

...oh yeah, I GAME. Plz consider that with your recs.

If you upgrade the CPU, you will need to do the motherboard and ram. Hard to find socket 775 CPUs anymore. Best bet is to upgrade the video card and PSU. This will give the best improvement with gaming.

Yeah, I realize that.
That is a separate issue, but thanks.

CPU & GPU are primary concern and my starting point, the rest will follow.

Of course new Ram & Mobo selection/choice isnt a huge concern right now as I dont O/C.
I'm sure a new PSU & Cooler will follow.
Total budget will be probably be about $1000.

..and the board thats being replaced is a 478 - OMG!

If you want to play the rebate game and don't have to pay sales tax:

Newegg.com - Intel Core i5-2400 Sandy Bridge 3.1GHz (3.4GHz Turbo Boost) 4 x 256KB L2 Cache 6MB L3 Cache LGA 1155 95W Quad-Core Desktop Processor BX80623I52400

Newegg.com - EVGA 012-P3-1571-AR GeForce GTX 570 HD w/Display-Port (Fermi) 1280MB 320-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card

Close enough? If you can spend a bit more, get a i5-2500K. A Radeon 6970 is also a good card in that class. Your 550VX meets minimum specs for either card.
