Just look at what is on sale on newegg. You should be able to get one for less than $30.

Optical drives are already cheap. You can get a decent quality name brand one for around 20 bucks. I bought an Asus for that price.

Get whatever DVD burner that Newegg currently has free shipping on. This can change daily. The only brand I don't trust is Samsung.

I have the bad PC luck of living in California, where Newegg taxes me, so I find myself browsing on Newegg but buying from Amazon :/

Edit: Nevermind that was dumb as the tax on an optical drive will be laughable

If your optical drive is 20 bucks, it's little less than two bucks depending on which city you are in. But I do the same thing, get information on Newegg and then sometimes buy from Amazon. Technically, you are supposed to pay your state taxes regardless of who you buy from. My sales taxes are 9.75% where I live which does not encourage people to be honest.

Oh, I'm still legally dependent on my parents so tax vs. no tax is a big deal haha!

Edit: So I'm looking at this one which is on a memorial weekend sale

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc..._-27135204-L0E

but under compatible software it says: Operating Systems Supported

Windows 2000
Windows NT
XP compatible
Vista compatible

Is Windows 7 really not supported? Are the above just additional ones? It's hard to imagine hardware being sold that doesn't support the latest operating system which is already at least a year old

Chances are excellent that the Windows 7 drivers will support your optical drive. If not you can always download the latest drivers from Asus.

Optical drives are optical drives, they will work in Win 7 with the built-in OS drivers. The OS compatibility is for the bundled software (if it even has any).

I have that exact same one and it runs on Windows 7 with no problems at all. (FYI: I have Windows 7 64-bit Home Premium).
